Lightning Resist and Absorb/Gloams

With Thundergod's visor giving me + 20 absorb and + 10 maximum resist and Fortitude giving me + 5 maximum resist, should I be okay to run Baal?

I'm not looking to park in front of Gloams but I want to have enough to not get 1 shot killed.

yes...
Either of those is good enough if you max res!
I believe gloams were stronger pre-1.13

Gloams used to scare me a lot ... and back it up with plenty of kills. These days as long as I have lightning resist over 70 and life over 800 I find I'm safe enough, playing HC. I guess if you are doing Baal runs you don't want to have to slow down every time you come across some Gloams. So maybe higher max resist and absorb would help with faster run times but they shouldn't be essential.

Wow, life over 800 is now safe for HC, I think I've read just about everything now.

Max res, plus any form of absorb whether it be tgods or wisp projector, will be definately sufficient.

More life is always better but with 800 life I feel pretty comfortable against gloams. Keep the merc between you and the gloams while closing, that way they target the merc. Keep moving so the gloams can't line you and the merc up together, or at least can't line you up very often or for long. Unless there is a Conviction aura around Gloams shouldn't make you poop your pants if you have a bit of patience.

Sorry for going OT. And yeah, sure 800 life is doable, I remember seeing guardians with less than 400. However, I am seriously amazed if you manage to do any form of speed running or even just regular non-careful full clears play (don't know your playstyle) with that amount of life. I personally wouldn't even consider making a character with <1500 life (I usually aim for +2.5k) unless it was for pindle, lk or something else that is super easy to survive (and those of you that know I deeded twice to pindle and once in lk, shut up). I think for any hc char that plans on doing any form of item/xp hunting you need to have a buffer of safety for when you will eventually make a mistake, and 800 life is just not that big a buffer. But, if you manage, huge probs.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to suggest that you should be doing speed runs with 800 life and 70 lightning resist, rather I meant that for Gloams that could be sufficient and that you don't need to nerf the rest of your gear to achieve 90% resist and masses of absorb just to deal with one monster. After all you're not even going to see Gloams most runs. If you can get more res/absorb without compromising anything else then all for the better. I find lots of monsters in WSK scarier than Gloams and would rather tailor my gear to deal with them.

I certainly wasn't suggesting meleeing Fanatic Death Lords with only 800 life.

I've speed ran through Act I-III Hell with no less than 3 sorcs with less than 800 life. It's doable, but very, very dangerous.

For gloams, depending on your life and playstyle, you probably won't need more than just 75% Lres.

Since 1.13 +% Damage from Champion and the Extra Strong Unique bonuses is halved then rounded down when applied to Willowisp physical melee attack damage, but their lightning bolt damage remains unchanged: those of Unique Willowisps and their minions in level 85 areas apply 200-300 base lightning damage, increasing by 1/16 with each additional player (maximum 287.5-431.25 at /players 8). As always there's 5% chance of a critical hit doubling damage, and non-physical damage added by Unique or Champion bonuses is also added to bolts.

Aside from equipping Lightning Resist, +% Maximum Lightning Resist and Lightning Absorb (the latter two aren't really necessary though), make sure you aren't standing next to a mercenary or pet when you're getting fired upon: the bolts have Last Collide enabled, which normally prevents them from colliding with their last target again, but the bolts are large enough that they can collide with an adjacent target and then collide with their previous target again (since it's no longer their last target) before moving out of range.

After all you're not even going to see Gloams most runs.
Black Souls spawn in the Worldstone Keep Level 2 ~48% (13/27) of the time, while Burning Souls spawn in the Throne of Destruction ~38% (17/45) of the time; at least one of them will spawn in those two areas ~67.7% of the time.

I run WSK sometimes with my Necro who has 1200 and 75 lightning res. Gloams are not a problem. He has high level DV but I often don't use it, specifically against Gloams, just to see if he can handle it. He can. This includes hero packs with elemental enchantments. The army is a mixed blessing; I never get focused, but I usually have to deal with 1 or 2 shots coming my way. So this is probably actually a blessing; better to get focused never than focused every now and then and possibly die.

I don't mess around with Conviction though. I DV those and hide in a corner for sure.
