levelling problem

Hi, my pure blizz sorc is at level 58 with her might merc at 56. The problem is I don't know if I should continue levelling in the chaos sanctuary (which I can solo) to give my merc xp, or to join baal runs to power level my char then catch the merc up later. (the chaos sanc is starting to give less xp than I would like)

I will eventually need the merc for hell as I am purely blizzard so he will need to be up to ~lvl70-75 to take care of the hordes of cold immunes.

Also, I have heard that if you are a much higher level than your merc then he gains xp less slowly, is this true?

Thanks for any input.

I'd go do some baal runs. Your merc will level very quickly in act1 hell. In order to help him deal with cold immunes, you should of course cast static, and buy a +3 firewall or +3 meteor staff to use on switch. It's not much, but it will help your merc stay alive longer.

NM pindle is also a very good place to level your merc.

i sounds like you are still in normal. go ahead and start nightmare. you won't encounter any ci's until late a5.

don't depend on the merc to take care of ci's either. i've had the experience where my merc couldn't do enough damage to certain monsters to overcome their regen. about the toughest ci they can handle in hell are skelli mages, and not too many of them at once.

i would do either of these two:
(1) solo chaos runs in full games. blizzard does absolutely insane damage for nightmare, and it is easy enough to do. i did these types of runs with my last 3 sorks; i gain about 1-2 lvls per run (depending on size of game and on my lvl). plus you get diablo drops.

(2) join baals and lvl merk later. it will be faster than #1, but not nearly as rewarding. get around 72 or so in baals (from there, i find baals rather slow), then go back and do solo baal runs to lvl merk/mf baal.

and iirc, your lvl doesnt matter to merks exp, only the difference in his lvl anf the monsters' (and if he kills them or you do). but in any case, at 56 he should lvl fine in late nm/hell, just as long as either you or him are killing.

sorry forgot to mention i was in nightmare, lvl 58 in normal would tk a while :p

hmm, if what you say is right about the merc i guess i should use something other than my insight 4soc bill (for the aura) would something like an obedience be better and rely on mana pots to keep casting blizzard? (no points in energy)

@xeyloderixed: chaos sanc gives my merc a problem because iron maiden can kill him 2 or 3 times depending on how many OK's spawn - part of the reason i'm reluctant to keep doing them.

Believe it or not this is the seceret for all leveling!

Use it with caution!!!!

Key:

in Rows - Character Levels
in Columns - Difficulty Level / Act
in Cells - average amount of experience you get from monster killed on this level/act.
in the 2nd (White) Row - average base experience of monster on this level/act

For example if you're level 55 you should play on Nightmare, Act4 (not considering Average Base Experience).

For calculation purposes it's assumed that on each level/act there is only one monster of every kind that is possible to meet on this level.

then you should definitely power level to 70 and let the merc catch up. i just did that. what i did was get the merc at 27, the lowest level to use insight. then, i just went along my way. 45 is the highest level, so i just hired a new one every few levels i got. by the time i hit 57 or so just questing, the merc would sponge off enough xp to get to 50-53. then i power levelled to 72 for eschutas. after that, i just walked around a5 and let the merc kill stuff until 60. at that point, i started hell knowing that the merc would get substantial xp from my kills, and i would probably die a few times (and i did) so the merc would eventually keep up.

one way to help out the merc is to use glacial spike. for boss packs of archers though i just killed them myself and moved on to easier monsters for him.
