Level'ing merc?

Any recommondations? Where the best place to do it? ALso, what kind of time commitment is this? thanks

There are a few basic guidelines you can follow:

• If the area is too big for your mercenary, he or she suffers an experience penalty. A question you should ask yourself is "Where would my character be killing for experience right now if I had that level?"
• Let your mercenary do the killing. If I recall correctly, you still get full experience for everything he or she kills, but that doesn't apply the other way around. So, the more he or she kills, the more experience he or she gets, while your experience gain remains the same.
• Support him or her with whatever you can to ensure that he or she kills fast. His or her equipment is also an important factor here, of course. The better he or she is able to fight, the faster he or she earns experience.
• Find games with more players for your mercenary to "solo" in, if he or she can handle it.

You choose how much time you want to put into it. Generally, mercenaries receive experience just like player characters do - that could give you an idea of how long it takes to get your mercenary to the desired level.

In my experience, going back to earlier areas to "level up" a merc is only needed if he/she is below level 25 (and you have reached a stage where the monsters you fight are way above that). After that, a different formula is used for merc XP so they will gain levels quickly, even if the character does all the killing and you fight high-level monsters.

For the early levelling:
Find an area level listing somewhere, and fight monsters (in the first three acts) within 5 levels from that of the merc. Play in games with as many players as possible (use /p8 on Single Player and TCP/IP games) and let the merc do all the killing.

my merc is like level 48 i believe, i've been bailing with him, and i'm almost 60...he hasnt leveled...where should i level him?

I lvl up mine merc nm cows. I do all killing because merc dies if i let him do all work, but still it gets 1-3 lvl / game. I do this till merc is lvl 60-65. Then i start do hell cows. Till about merc lvl 75-80.

yes. NM cows is the best place to train level 50 +/- mercs.

After they reach level 60, pits and countess are much better areas for training, they die too often at hell cows.

you can easily train a level 70 merc at pits and countess and jump 10 levels in about 2 hours.

I keep my Merc upto date with me levelling up, im at the moment lvl 81 and hes lvl 79, altho its quite hard to get the cash when he keeps dying (whoops) when we get ambushed. Its the potions i tell thee... gonna have to get some Rejuvs instead of standard potions.

I used to have it were i would be around level 80, and hed only be lvl 50, in the past, i found that it was far more tedious so i decided to just spend extra few minutes to make sure he was only 1 or 2 levels below me, than 20+
