    "Legendary Items"

I'm not a wow player and frankly know squat about the game, but sometimes O heard some wow players talking about "legendary items". And now (a tidbit of info included in the gamescom interviews, actually) the same item category name is being used in context of Diablo 3. I don't get it, are unique items gone for good or just renamed to "legendary"?

Then again, form a logical standpint, those "unique" items in Diablo 2 were everything but unique, given you could get as many "copies" of that same unique item as you want (or to be more precise - how much pindle would give you). Perhaps then this naming for uniques is not a bad idea. Then again - I'm too nostalgic about that naming AND their names written in GOLD text.

I say OK to that "legendary" naming, but make the text GOLD for God's sake!

    What do you think?

    Re: "Legendary Items"

The term "unique" describes an item's rarity. The term "legendary" describes an item's quality. Ergo, if you want to describe an item's relative quality then "legendary" is the better choice.

    Re: "Legendary Items"

Uniques are functionally now Legendaries. The provided justification for changing it to purple is because gold is too similar to yellow. (Personally I would prefer Red, though.)

So, yeah, it's a small nostalgia vs. minor increase in functionality/reasonableness debate. And the WoW comparisons, but bleh.

    Re: "Legendary Items"

I think the reason they went with orange is because orange is the complementary (opposite) color to blue.

So from a color theory point of view, legendary (orange) items will really stand out among all the magic (blue) items you find lying on the ground.

    Re: "Legendary Items"

i think orange is fine. how many different item types will we have anyway? 5? i never got confused by the gold/yellow in D2 but i guess i can see how some people might have. really the color does not matter whatever they go with players will get used to

    Re: "Legendary Items"

I sometimes had a hard time distinguishing rares from uniques when playing on maps with bright backgrounds, like acts 2 (desert) and 5 (tundra). But yeah, it doesn't really matter.

    Re: "Legendary Items"

I thought legendary items were colored purple? At least, that's what i would prefer.
I'm guessing "unique gold colored" items will be items tied to quests and such.
So the proverbial Staff of Kings would be a unique item in D3.

ps: I'm just glad they're not called EPiC ItAmZ in rainbow.

They've been orange (or red-brown) for a few months I think, the color scheme was discussed in one of the D3-heavy Blizzcasts a while ago.

    Re: "Legendary Items"

The simplest solution would have been to swap "Rares" and "Uniques" round. Since D2 Rares are unique, and D2 Uniques are only rare.

    Re: "Legendary Items"

That's a good point Arbedark. I also found it difficult to distinguish between tan and yellow. Crafted items used to be orange. Considering that crafted items were just rares and that rares are the most unique items in D2 then orange seems quite fitting.

    Re: "Legendary Items"

Oh, I really did like that nice gold color, probably just a psychological color association thing now. I mean, the joy associated with that color has been hammered into my psyche pretty hard now, haha!

If I were to complain, I'd say that purple just doesn't seem to match the color scheme of Diablo, even Diablo III. I mean they deal with all these warm, rustic, dreary colors...and then we have purple.

    Re: "Legendary Items"

D2 uniques were only rare due to multiplayer. In one game, no two unique can spawn (results in a failed roll, which becomes rare with boosted durability). Two identical rares can.

Naturally, the chance of either happening is slim.

    Re: "Legendary Items"

    "Legendary" is better than "Unique".
    "Gold" is better than "Orange".

If some can't differentiate gold from yellow, they should make rares orange and legendary items should stay gold.

    Re: "Legendary Items"

    Proposal.

Make Legendaries Red. It's very Diabloeqsue cause Diablo is red. See? Then make broken item color pink or even rainbow to humiliate the noob who let its items go broken.

    Re: "Legendary Items"

Cursed items should be red. They curse you as soon as you pick it. This would stop FFA loot ninjas in D2. Hmmm. I should suggest this idea for PoE.

P/S: "Curse" is a permanant effect. This is a hardcore game after all.

    Re: "Legendary Items"

C'mon apocalypse, Diablo I was even more hardcore than PoE. Did you forget the shrine effects, friendly fire, PVP, item dropping? Why shouldn't Diablo 3 be hardcore?
