King Lemmiwinks, HC Untwinked Classic WW Barb

    Hello there SPF!

Been a while since my last character, this one has taken longer than most :)

Have been getting a bit bored recently, mfing and rune running wasn't really doing it for me, and CS and Baal were also getting a bit tedious, so I thought I would try a new challenge.

Didn't fancy another untwinked LoD character, and for some reason I was drawn to Classic. First I tried a Light zon, got to around level 18 and got bored, not massively fun either doing no damage or burning a full mana orb in a couple of seconds, also spent about 25k gambling Javelins thinking I was just getting horrendously unlucky, but it turns out you can't get magic or rare throwing weapons in Classic ;) Then I was going to try a Summon Necro, but only took me 6 levels to remember why I haven't played one in 3 or 4 years. So I settled on a Barb.

Played him as a Double Swing Barb up to the early 30s, they were probably the hardest levels I had to get through. Unleechables were a nightmare, and if anything was Cold enchanted things became extremely difficult. My initial plan was to go p8 normal and nightmare and p1 Hell as per usual but around The Catacombs and using blue weapons I decided to knock it down a few notches. Went down to p5 until the end of Act 2 and p3 for pretty much the rest of the game.

My fist issue that I had to overcome was mana leech, which I realised was easily found using the 3 chipped gem and a magic weapon recipe, then socketting with skulls, this weapon may not look like much but it got me through p3 nightmare in pretty short time
    Jagged Great Maul of Frost
    Two-Hand Damage: 45 to 69
    Durability: 22 of 60
    Required Strength: 99
    Required Level: 12
Mace Class - Slow Attack Speed
    Item Version: 1.10+ Standard
    Item Level: 25

+1 cold damage over 2 seconds
    6% Life stolen per hit
    4% Mana stolen per hit
    150% Damage to Undead
    Socketed (2: 2 used)

I then starting pumping Strength up to 169 so I could weild a Martel, and shopped and rerolled one at the end of NM, and I believed but for a stroke of luck I was probably using my end game weapon
    Soldier's Martel de Fer
    Two-Hand Damage: 91 to 148
    Durability: 60 of 60
    Required Strength: 169
    Required Level: 25
Mace Class - Slow Attack Speed
    Item Version: 1.10+ Standard
    Item Level: 30
    Fingerprint: 0x2165bf65
    +50% Enhanced Damage
    +68 to Attack Rating
    8% Life stolen per hit
    6% Mana stolen per hit
    150% Damage to Undead
    Socketed (2: 2 used)

Fortunately, I got a pretty nice imbue which I used for the end of Act 3 and Act 4, which you can see in the gear list below.

Turns out finding a usable weapon was the least of my worries, the rest of the gear was pretty hard to come by, as you can see from the ilvl of most of my gear, the majority of it came from normal, some from nightmare and one piece from hell. I aimed to keep Fire and Lightning resists maxed as a priority, then just carried Thawing and Antidote potions for situational use. A few of my NDEs occured when I didn't check the mods of the bosspack I was coming up against and they turned out being LECE, and once whirlwinding all you can do is pray that you survive the attack and are able to down a rejuv at the end. My worst one was in Act 2 NM Sewers, whirlwinding through a pack of LECE skeletons, so no leech, I believe I went from about 1.2k to around 30hp!

The problem with having a fixed speed WW, regardless of WIAS, is that you don't tend to look for IAS on your weapon, so when you come up against a PI, Berserk is terribly slow, and my AR was around 1k towards the end, which is about 40% cth. This meant the Arcane Sanctuary wasn't going to be easy. I was underlevelled so Howl was out of the question. I basically ran from the waypoint whirlwinding through everything and leaping across the gaps, by the time I reached the Summoner (on the first attempt thankully) it was a bit of a Benny Hill affair with dozens of ghosts chasing after me. So I downed a Thawing Pot, leaped onto the Summoner, a couple of short Whirlwinds saw him go down and I jumped through the Portal just as a huge army was about to swarm me, fun times!

I did a fair few reruns with this character, tried LK running in normal but wasn't massively profitable, earnt a lot of gold though which I used to gamble my boots. Did a couple of NM CS runs just to get the strength which I needed to wear the Martel, ran Fireeye for a few levels in Hell as I was starting to get behind the level curve a bit, same for the Flayer Jungle, as I was approximately 5 levels behind where I needed to be.

I have a few thoughts about Classic vs LOD. The level and character progression is much smoother in Classic, ie, there's no massive gain of levels in one Act (I'm thinking Act 5 normal) where it is not unrealistic to go from late 20s to late 40s early 50s with little effort. Gear is harder to come by, there are multiple low level runewords and crafting recipes which make gearing up a LOD character much easier. Only thing I missed about not having a merc was the walking might aura and Decrep on everything, didn't feel any less safe without one, this may change if I'm not running a Barb however. I did miss the socket reward in Act 5 however, I'd have loved a Thul in my helm or armor! One of the nice things about Classic in my eyes is the lack of runewords and nice uniques, so any rare is potentially an upgrade.

    Enough rambling anyway:

    Stats:
    King Lemmiwinks
Lvl 71, 2347 life and 255 mana after BO
    (170) 177 Str, (Base) 24 Dex 250 Vita 10 Ene

595-984 WW Damage with 1218 AR
    679-1122 Berserk with 1265 AR

    75/34/75/8 resists, no %DR, 1 PDR and 4 MDR
    605 defence (no, this isn't a typo)

Skills, 20 WW, 20 BO, 20 Mace Mastery, 5 NR, 2 Find item (point dump here) rest in 1 point wonders. (+1 all skills after BC)

Best find were the boots he's wearing though, by a mile.

As for hellforges, I actually did them to remove the temptation of converting him to expansion!

All in all a pretty fun character, a nice change from LOD and I'd recommend it to anyone fancying a change of pace.

Thanks for reading, and thanks to the Classic forum for having some really nice stickies and guides. I actually learnt a lot about the game playing classic, hopefully a few others will give it a go too!

    Cheers,
    Milb :)

Very, very nice Guard... King! Great read, too.

I recently attempted the same thing myself (same build). I played 1.06 though, which didn't make it easier. No /players means slooow leveling. Reached level 30 in NM LK ... and then died trying out WW for the first time .

What patch added this new /players command?? I never heard of that before today. I assume that typing in /players 5 or whatever makes the monsters as hard and give as much exp per kill as if there were 5 other players in the game, and they aren't around you to take exp off the kill?
