Hard to tell. The North Koreans are pretty clever and hard to predict. It could just be a part of the barrage of provocations they're been shooting off.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's real though. They did actually perform an ICBM test, so why not. If they've got the fissionable material it's easier to build a bomb than an ICBM. If they have a bomb it's probably a smart thing to prove it.

    Yeah, I love it.

"You're going to use this nuclear program to build weapons."
"No we aren't, it's peaceful! Peaceful!"
    "Yes you are!"
    "No we aren't!"
    "Yes you are!"
    "No we aren't!"

    "No we aren't!"
    "Yes you are!"
    "No we aren't!"
    "Yes you are!"
"Well since you're being so aggressive, we're going to have to build nuclear weapons to defend ourselves!"

They've openly admitted to having nuclear weapons. They denied building them until they came out and said they had them, IIRC.

And let's not forget that they're actually at war with the US, who are developing new forms of nuclear weapons to bust bunkers and such. I read somewhere that the North consider one of their cross-DMZ tunnels as effective as an atomic weapon. I don't know if that's true, but there's no doubt they make use of tunnels and bunkers. If you were at war with the US, wouldn't you be worried when the US came up with a weapon that looked specifically designed to deal with you?

Are they agressive and scary? Hell yeah. Is that due to paranoia and madness of their rulers? Absolutely not. Say what you will about the North Koreans, but don't tell me they're madmen acting without reason.

The DPRK is still at war with South Korea and not the U.S. Sure, there are 30,000 U.S. troops on the Korean Peninsula, and South Korea is kind of a satellite nation, but I think the troops are just there for the kimchi and pulgoki.

    Yes, I was paraphrasing.

    Oh, please.

Oh. I didn't know the US had a signed peace agreement with the North. I'll take your word for it since I'm too lazy to look into it.

Anyhow... thatnks for bringing up the occupation. From what I've read it's not too popular with the South either, and you can hardly blame the North for being a bit wary of troops from a nation that has all but declared "regime change" a must in their country.

    EDIT:
They're part of the "Axis of Evil". Remember what happened to Iraq?

You have to agree they have some reasons to be worried.

They have nothing to worry about, as long as they do as they're told.

They're paranoid (well, big surprise - they are a secretive extremist regime). It's true that the Axis of Evil nonsense was a big stupid blunder that gave them the excuse for all this, but if they were at all sane they'd realize that they aren't really on America's hit list.

But of course, this paranoia plays right into Kim Jong Il's hand. Heh, I remember seeing a documentary on North Korea (it of course had to be vetted by their Department of What We Say Goes, so it was quite muted and peculiar) - they showed a family sitting down to a meal when all the power went out (apparently a common thing). One of the people said "damn Americans!"...

The relevant question here is, what do you people think there is to gain by painting the North Korean leadership as lunatics acting without reason or aim? Personally I have a hard time seeing what good could possibly come from that attitude. It's not like it promotes a better understanding of what's going on.

"I don't like Kim Jong-Il so I'll stop thinking in order to punish him!"

Well, they wouldn't stand much a chance of the Kamikaze North Koreans actually decided to unleash hell on the them ... and neither would Seoul for that matter.

Our aggressive foreign posture and saber rattling is actually pushing certain nations toward nuclear armament and testing.

There is plenty of blame to go around for this situation.

I love how the UN's first action is to condem them. I guess the UN hopes N.Korea will feel bad and stop what it is doing.

They're (ie their leaders are) lunatics, but they still act with aim. That's the scary part.

So you agree that this situation didn't just fall out of the sky?

It's possible to dislike North Korea and still admit that their actions depend to some degree upon a certain context, and so on.

I'm just suprised that the PRC is sitting still while an unpredictable neighbor stocks up on nukes.

I wonder if the US have had some talks with the PRC in re Chinese military intervention.

I keep waiting for you to come right out and say the United States is to blame, but you keep beating around the bush. What're you waiting for, anyway?

Of course, no such situation is created ex nihilo. How much their actions were spurred by Bush's dumbarse speech and how much that was merely a pretext for sabre-rattling their government always wanted is however unclear.

    Fixed that for you.

Extra points for using ex nihilo.
