Kill Bill on DVD

Kill Bill on DVD

I understand that the American version of this DVD has the "tea room scene" in black and white. Is this the major fight scene of the movie, where she kills all the Yakuza? If so, I'm a little disappointed I can't get this in color, since color is so important to such a stylistic movie as this one. I also understand that there are other "minor" changes made, things that are different on the Japanese version of the DVD. But anyone know what, specifically? And why is rating important on DVDs anyway? Jeez, it's just blood.

I had never seen the movie before I bought the dvd on Thursday, but the majority of the scene you mentioned is indeed shifted to black and white.

That sucks, is there no way to view it in the original version?
Most DVDs that have added scences and such you can view the movie in the original theatrical release, or with the new stuff.

I think the black and white thing was just for theatres to get the movie

down to an R rating. Im pretty sure that on DVD it will be in color since

the rating doesnt matter once its on DVD.

I don't understand why the Japanese portions weren't subtitled.

There was alot of stuff going on within the (sometimes absolutely horrendous) Japanese scenes that I thought might be interesting for American audiences.

This is funny because I'm just now finishing watching this movie on DVD. I didn't see it in theatres. I wondered about the black and white segment also. I just assumed it was a stylistic choice by Tarintino, but still thought it was weird. So you guys are saying that it was required to be that way in order to qualify for an R rating? It didn't really seem all that bad to me. Other movies such as Braveheart and Saving Private Ryan were just as bad. Maybe they are more lenient for historical films.

Most retailers such as Best Buy Buy don't have a problem selling unrated DVDs. I got the unrated version of American Wedding there, for example. So they could have gone unrated if they wanted.

I thought QT did the black and white thing for style and such...

But to echo what others have been saying: yes the scene in the tea room is mostly in black and white on the dvd but it still kicks total ***!

I read an interview with Tarantino and he mentioned that the scene in question was shifted to black and white for Western audiences.

Did the interview cite any reason for doing this immortal? This is the first I'm hearing of it.

It was in the paper over here. I can't really remember, something about because western audiences aren't as used to the kind of violence as the Eastern audiences. Or somesuch. Either way, Japan gets it in color. Personally, I like the black and white.

If you are talking about the US version, there is an audio option where the japanese is subtitled. There are 2 english audio options and one is for hearing impaired (everything is subtitled) and the other is subtitled for english speakers (only japanese is subtitled). Just go to the subtitles menu and choose "english" and you'll be good to go. I had this complaint at first too.

If I remember right the basic rationale was that Japanese audiences were expected to 'get' the humour of the ludicrously OTT blood and gore, but that Western audiences were more likely to be offended and whine about violence.

Here is what I can explain from various sites I've read on the subject. The only DVDs that have the scene in color (aka, the Uncut version, because it also has a few more minutes of footage,) are the Region 2 Japanese and Region 3 Thai releases. The Thai release is superior to the Japanese one in that it has English subtitles, but I have also heard that the Japanese version also had English subtitles, only it was for all dialogue, not just the Japanese dialogue. So I don't know if the Thai release has English subtitles that work only for the Japanese dialogue. Also, the Thai release is supposed to be cheaper than the Japanese release. But the point is, all American releases so far only have the B&W scene and other things cut out.

What I was hoping for was if someone in the know could tell me if there would be an "uncut/unrated" version, that included this stuff you can only get overseas, soon to be released in the states. Apparantly no one knows. One guy at DVD Debate says that the studio/distributor doesn't do those as a matter of practice, but that's just a rumor.

The conflict explained: The Asian DVD of Volume 2 has the House of Blue Leaves scene in color. Not only was it shown in black and white for stylistic reasons, but this has also got to do with regulations in Europe+US. It may come across as too violent...so they say. Asian movie regulators simply have a higher tolerance level when it comes to things like this.

The so-called "uncut" version is not said to be released any time soon, it is only available form Asian distributors. By the way, I ordered it (Damn amazing scenes...)

I strongly recommend seeing Volume 2 now, it's an in-depth and solid conclusion to an amazing movie. As you may have realised I am an absolute Tarantino maniac...the man is god.

I'm sure when Kill Bill vol 2 comes out on DVD, there'll be a special box set with both movies and options to view the House of Blue Leaves scene in color or B&W and
