    Journey of a Shadow

(Man I've lurked this place so long I forgot my initial sign-up nickname 8D)

    Hello, everyone!

I'd like you all to meet Irongirl, and her pair of Katars.
She has the original skillbuild of the Shadow Disciple.
She plays Hardcore /p8. She kills everything she sees. She never refuses a challenge, and never rerolls her monsters. Just today, she entered Nightmare.

You might've noticed the similarity with Superdave's insanity run, and I won't deny that I'm blatantly copying it, with a different class. I'm only doing it for my own enjoyment, and to be honest, I'm nowhere near as tenacious as he, so I'll most likely get deeded along the road. So place your bets!

    Nice!

I'll have to follow this and see how far you get! ;)

    Good luck with Nightmare.

    Re: Journey of a Shadow

I actually had my first near-death experience.

This pack (with 3 champions) might not look too dangerous; and they weren't. Until they killed my merc AND my shadow, and proceeded to corner me. Thank god for full rejuv potions and town portals on hotkey.

Andy went down with no trouble. Poison-immune Shadow tanks for my merc, and is recast when necessary.

And the green amulet? It's the second time Andy dropped it for her, just when you don't need it anymore :>

Time for act 2. Luckily my lightning resistance is pretty good.

    Re: Journey of a Shadow

Meh. Only a Fal from Hellforge.

Over the course of this adventure I've seen my Shadow do a number of both neat and annoying stuff. She likes to spam Shock Web, she likes to Convert the mobs I want dead first, she sometimes likes to walk around aimlessly, but at least on bosses she always melees. She even chucks a shuriken occasionally. She never, ever, casts Cloak of Shadows, though, so Arreat Summit is wrong on that.
She also loves spawning with a Flee On Hit mod, which overwrites my Cloak and only lasts an instant. Immediate recast. Other than that she also gets Chain Lightning mods a lot. And Hydras. That looked fun, for the time she lasted :3

    Anyway.
I recall SuperDave needed 2 hours to kill Diablo on Nightmare. I can see why, he hits hard enough to one-shot my merc, and my Shadow doesn't last very long if he hits often, either. Still, I believe he was overstating it.
Diablo after 25 minutes of recasting Shadows.
I don't know if Shadows have higher DPS than Valks, but four times as long? I don't think so.
    Loot sucked of course.

Yes for very undergeared characters yes but what I did was I lured them out of the room where baal is because my barb was not strong enough to beat them. Then I was able to reach baal without killing baals minions.

This would be going faster if act 5 wasn't BORING AS SIN :<

The outside areas are filled to the brim with annoying pathing and mobs that keep running away. /annoyed

Needs a quality podcast to keep me entertained while clearing these areas.

    Re: Journey of a Shadow

Just a quick update to show I'm not dead.

Just when I get back into my game, the game says hello with this. Now, that's scary of itself. What you don't see is the hell clan champion with Might I already killed. Nor do you see the third hell clan champion, who, thank god, only had stone skin/mana burn. Thankfully I had a ton of space to kite in and Cloak of Shadows to separate them.

Raise hand if you know about the fire throwing Salamanders!

    Re: Journey of a Shadow

Screenshots stopped working for some reason D:

I'm always afraid of Nilathak. All the times I've just instantly died to a corpse explosion (granted, it only happens on Hell, but I fear him anyway)... I was planning to pull his adds out of corpse explosion range, but that's really not possible, if you're unlucky he can teleport back into range. Safest tactic is to just create a big space without a single corpse in sight.

I was lucky this time; Nilathak decided to TP in front of his army so my merc could kill him before getting rid of the trash. When he did teleport away, all the trash got stacked up in one place and I only had to avoid it.

Worse was the road up to him. Poison Javelin vipers just annihilate your merc with the multihit bug (where the physical damage keeps hitting if you stand in the trail). Had to clear all of that with only my shadow.

Off to the ancients now, with my pair of Irongirl's Katars!

    Re: Journey of a Shadow

Damnit, why won't it save screenshots :(

Ah well. Run to and through the Ancients' Way was fairly relaxed, no overly annoying mob spawns. The Icy Cavern treated me to a nice Physical Immune Gloam, but they do so little damage on Nightmare with 75 resistance, and my minions had enough elemental damage to take it down relatively quickly.

Firing up the Ancients, I stocked up on a dozen full rejuvernation potions, a lot of mana potions for Shadow resummons, and a few health potions to finish. Turns out, these guys hit like pussies. So I went and reset it to trade my mana potions in for health potions.

00:00 - Engage. Killing Korlic first is the only option, because he Leaps on top of your shadow and it just takes WAY too much manoeuvring to make everyone focus Madawc.
00:15 - Out of potions, merc is dead. Korlic is around 33% health, the rest is around 60%. Crushing Blow did its job.
00:30 - Korlic dies! At this point I really start manoeuvring because I want to get my shadow in a position where Madawc doesn't run from her, and preferably Talic also stops using Whirlwind. This happens when you face him towards a cliff. Managed to position them something like this:

    || M - S - T
    (|| = cliff, M = Madawc, S = Shadow, T = Talic)

00:45 - Madawc bites the dust. Shadow turns around and starts beating on Talic. She hardly took any damage at all after he stopped whirlwinding; I could've fished for an Amplify Damage spawn, but I was afraid of losing this perfect position.
    01:10 - YOU ARE A WORTHY HERO.

    Longest encounter sofar!

Oh god this guy took ages to kill.

If anyone has any idea how I can make screenshots work again, I'd be grateful. Pasting into Paint isn't the most pleasant way to do this.

    Re: Journey of a Shadow

I do hate Achmed. It takes so long to get all of those unravellers in a good position to pick them off, and to make it even more annoying, he spawned with Teleportation to annoy me even further!
Ventar might seem dangerous with these mods, but with Cloak of Shadows it's very easy to pull him away from his group and pick him off by himself. As soon as he's dead, his minions are only Extra Fast, and not dangerous at all.
Lister spawned with good mods for me. It takes a while to scatter the minions into groups of 1-3, but they're very easy to pick off once you manage to.

And my god the Baal fight is tedious. Every time he summons appendages, one of my guys attacks them. Normally I can steer my Shadow's AI by moving to melee the mob I want her to attack, but for some reason she ignored me half the time. And every time he summons a clone, the only thing you can do is make a town portal, restock on potions and force it to despawn. To add to that, his melee hits harder than potions can heal, leading to quiet a few merc deaths; I didn't want to use every single full rejuv potion I had left on this fight.

I did have hydras helping me, though! But, as you might've guessed, and following the pattern, loot sucked.

Next up: Cows. I hate the first steps into the cow level. Get a large pack of cows in every direction and you're gonna be running for it. D:
