It's Official, Xbox 2 will NOT ship with a Hard Drive

From Evil Avatar
CEO of partner company and memory device provider M-Systems, Dov Moran confirmed today that the next version of the Xbox will not ship with a hard drive. Team Xbox has the story.

â€It’s a cooperation agreement. The potential isn’t clear, but it’s in the billions of dollars. Microsoft has taken the hard disk out of its Xbox. The only thing left will be a CD; that’s all. At some point, when users want to save their e-mail messages, copy music, or anything like that, the only storage they’ll have is what we give them. It’s worth hundreds of millions to the company, spread over a few years, and we’ll be the main supplier for it; and I hope the sole supplier. â€Meanwhile, development is intense, and requires expenses, although not major ones. We’ll start supply only in 2005.â€
This is interesting. It seems like a bad move, but Microsoft had to make it. A few weeks ago, a Microsoft employee spoke about the money being lost off of the Xbox despite the good amount of units they were selling due to production costs. Now, let's see what Sony does...

This may also have to do with the fact that people are chopping up Xboxes to make a cheap computer and MS doesn't want this. They are like any other company that makes more than one thing they don't want one item to do it all they want to make people buy each thing they make. People putting a mod chip in and then installing Linux with it as well as a 250gig HD isn't what MS intended for their little baby.

You can't really do much with a 5 gig HD computer, tho. The money's the main part, though.

Interesting reply, canadia. heh

The current speculation is for flash drives it seems, or some other internal memory storage I believe.
