it's here... the end of the internet

Microsoft has finally posted the official release of Internet Explorer 7. No beta, no release candidate. This is the real deal.

Supposedly, any windows xp user with automatic updates will have IE7 installed. I checked and it seems that it's not the case at the moment. But you can manually download it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/about/default.mspx

Generally speaking, IE7 is still without question a critical security update for Micrsoft's browser. It does fix numerous security holes from IE6. I just installed it for the hell since i dont use IE usually anyways. It does run a lot smoother than before and the new features seem pretty nice. It seems that the biggest improvement that people praise is the rss feeds, but i'm not a big feed person so i'm dont use it anyways.

All in all, i'm still gonna keep IE7. Either way, it's not a big deal for me.
there is a way to stop the automatic update. You can download the tool here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/updatemanagement/windowsupdate/ie7announcement.mspx

Any thoughts? Keep IE6 or switch to 7?

oh and how is this end of the internet? they claim that a lot of stuff wont be compatible with IE7. And besides, who likes IE anyways? Firefox/Opera ftw!

Downloading it now...sounds like Microsoft is a bit...non-compliant. Still, those guys have a point. Microsoft has 85% of the PC Market, everyone has to deal with them...there's no getting around it short of several nukes to Bill Gates' head...just to blast off some cubic kilometers of it's enormity.

EDIT: I finished downloading. I like the new look, very organized. Also, everything seems to minimize automatically when you're not using it, so the view screen tends to be much bigger...a plus for me. Gonna take a while to get used to where the buttons and toolbars are, but otherwise I'm all for it.

Also, first website I went to it started prompting me if I wanted it to protect me from evil bastard websites, like Phish-sites and stuff. Sounds like a big improvement to me.

P.S: Does donrei know that there is an EDIT button? I pick on him/her/it because I just saw two posts right after each other within minutes. Making a new post is fine and dandy if you're responding to someone, so that the thread flows...but seriously, making a new post for every little thing is...spam. EDIT BUTTON FTW.

Glad my version of Windows pre-dates auto-update. *Shudder*

I have lots of threads open to lots of pages at once, sometimes I forget I've already responded in one thread and don't realize until it's too late. And occasionally it would otherwise be too long.

Must be confusing. I only have one forum page up at a time.

I open every bright red thread at once and then flick through. Sometimes I open multiple pages in the same thread, especially if I'm responding to one post and flicking through the others.

What's the point of having a tabbed browser if you don't use that feature?
I dont see why you cant simply use more than one browser window up instead of using tabs. Also, when I tried with tabs, I more than once closed all tabs at once when I only wanted to get rid of one. That settles it for me.

It's a lot easier on the computer to open five-ten pages in tabs than in separate browsers.

Accidentally closing the browser instead of a tab only happens when you're not used to tabs, would be my guess. It's not the browsers fault.

EDIT: Why would anyone want an automatic update system that doesn't even ask you permission to download and install stuff? That could only ever be useful for people who are ignorant enough to not know which browser they use and those people have no opinion about these things.

Yes, ofc it only happens if you aren't used to it, but since I'm fine with how it works now, I see no need to get used to something I won't use.
And I only have maximum 2-3 browsers up at once anyway, so its not that hard on the computer.

Bah, in my world the only tabs I ever hear about are those connected to playing guitar. And alt-tab!

Well, you do have options for the update mechanism:
  1. Download and install all updates automatically
  2. Download updates automatically, but only install manually
  3. Notify of updates, but do not download or install
There's also option 4, disable the updater service.

If I want a newer version of something (ie, if it isn't working) I'll damn well seek it out myself.

Especially with MS "updates" - often the cure is worse than the illness.

Uhh.

The other features of a browser. In Firefox's case, the customizable look. I am, however, a convert to the good of tabs. Especially since i no long keep my browser window maximized (a change that resulted from buying a laptop).

Hence why mine has been physically disabled. The auto-update is for people who have no idea what they're doing and/or are dumb enough to feel safe when auto-update is turned on.
