Item Types and Other Ramblings

One of the many reasons that Diablo II and Diablo I appealed to me was that the game producers really drew the weapons of the games from lots of different time periods. Most (if not all) of the item types were taken from actual human history (edit: deleted for weapon examples). The following come to mind, pilum used by Romans, claymores, broad sword, and cuirass to name a few. The closeness both in graphics and function really added to my gaming experience. I remember the first time I saw cuirass drop in act 2 and was bewildered as to what this foreign named item was. You could tell that the game producers really drew the weapons of previous Diablo games from lots of different time periods and this was something I thought very highly of.

Will the game producers shy away from this and go to a much more basic, sword, bow, staff build? I definitely do not think so. I hope (and fully expect) that the creators, producers, and programmers will their homework yet again and deliver us a strangely authentic weapon battle system to slay mythical demons with.

Yet the variety and historical significance of the item types has it's weakness. I would say the majority of items were completely useless save for creative recreation. There were countless ideas for characters based around the many varieties of items, yet if you wanted to remain competitive (be it PvP or PvM) the vast majority of builds were ineffective at the higher difficulties. DII daggers immediately come to mind (save for necro-dagger builds, even then). This could of been easily tweaked if assassin's passive and active claw abilities were made to benefit daggers. This is just one of the many examples that could be applied to DIII.

Yes, I hope skills and characters to come are not too restricted on certain weapon types.

I also hope, though, that they do not just stick a bunch of magic attributes on items turning them into throwing axe-shaped or dagger-shaped wands that never get used the way the weapon was intended to be.

The more endgame weapon types = more builds based on these different weapons types = more replay ability....Blizzard knows this and I have faith they will, if they haven't already, implement this.
