Is this OK at the SPF?

You should know that AlterEgo's views on D2 cheese are a bit harsher than the general opinion. He even acknowledges this himself.

Generally I find hot-muling problematic for two reasons:

1: It expands your effective inventory space, no more balancing of charms vs. space in MF runs.

2: It allows access all of your wealth in-game instead of having to "pack the essentials before going on a journey".

In the Gheed's Charm instance where hot-muling is only used to overcome a peculiarity that screws over single-players I am all for it.

In general hot-muling is bad, Gheed's Charm being the exception to the rule.

Actually 'hot-muling' doesn't allow you 'access to all your wealth in-game' since D2 will occasionally auto-save, but never re-loads... so if you 'hot-muled' on, say, a Windforce, don't expect it to suddenly show up!

It does however allow you to work around the space issue. Personally I would say it's ok to use on Gheed's, since Blizzard should really have simply 'disabled' any of them that were in excess of the limit (1), so you could carry ten but only 'use' one.

Since I'm paranoid I never actually use Gheed's Fortune for anything other than mass shopping/gambling, it's too precious to risk! :)

You know what guys, as I like to play this game as pure as possible I am giving up on hot muling Gheeds Fortune and I am withdrawing them from the trade list.
It really shouldnt be to hard to find one, I dont remember how many of them I already found, and its really sweeter when you have your own one.
AlterEgo has inspired me for this decision.

Thats just me. :buddies:

I'm against hot muling. You're using a third party program that to do something that was never intended to be part of the game, which I thought this place was dead against? *shrug* I don't trade so I'm not at all worried about it. The most important thing, is of course, I can't (no ATMA) so it's not fair that you can :p

We are going round and round here, the same "not intended to be part of game" can be said of using ATMA to save a stash of over 1k unique items.

There's pure, and then there's "pure".

IMO the "purest" form of the SP game is to start in the Rogue Camp with the equipment the game gives you, play through to the Worldstone Chamber in one marathon session, transfer to the next difficulty, and repeat. The save feature is only needed because most people don't have a spare PC they can dedicate to running D2 24/7, but to exploit the save feature to do anything (such as MF running) which isn't possible on a single pass could, by that standard, be considered "cheating".

I like to play my characters to something resembling that standard of purity. I also like to collect set items, for possible use later for set-themed characters. I will quite happily hot-mule set items in order to minimally compromise the game experience for the character that found the item, who shouldn't have to sacrifice precious stash space to hold set items for transfer that they're never going to use (when you're not using ATMA to simulate infinite backup stash, juggling available stash space becomes a major part of the game).

If hot-muling were not possible I would play my SP characters in solo MP games (which doesn't lose me anything except preserving the map). I have a second PC and second copy of D2 I could use to bring in mule characters to pick up set items as they were found. Hot-muling is much nicer, though :)
