is this forum still 'clean'?

I remember at one point this forum was very staunchly opposed to anything cheating related. Dupes, hacks... anything.

Now, people openly discuss how to keep their duped high runes from getting deleted by blizzard on these forums... it almost brings a tear to my eye

What happened... Blizzard... What have you done?!?! *shakes fist*

in the community forum those threads are now locked...some mods are just more active than others so things like that may slip though in a couple forums.

With the inception of the overpowered 1.10 runewords came the general acceptance of duped high runes as commonplace and, eventually, currency, much like the SOJ of 1.09.

Items for which there should really only be one or a few of left at this point are not allowed, i.e. pre-1.09 uniques, certain Classic rares, certain godly rare boots/rings/amulets, etc. Everything else appears to be fair game.

The forum has given up long time ago. When i see guides recommending "last wish" as main weapon,i mean are you serious? But it's up to Blizzard:If you just "try" to fix some major exploits once in a year, this is bound to happen.Yesterday i played with a young german player,i rushed him and he constantly begged for items and proudly told me his "chicken prog" saves him in tricky situations.Today i baaled with some lvl96-98 chars in pw games...1-2 seconds and the tp in the throne was ready. They told me about a new hack which allows a hammerdin to pk you without knowing/seeing that you are hostiled. Two chars make a duel and the hostile sign is not revealed.I have seen a hammerdin and coldsorc hunting in public baals..can anyone confirm this new pk/tppk?

i dont think its totally on blizzards shoulders to deal with it. when you have an online community that not only condones, but encourages the use of those dupewords, exploits, etc, what example are you setting for those that do play? that its alright to be a cheat? isnt that what a guide that calls for an all but impossible to make ( legit ) runeword items is saying? its also the responsibility of the community to decide that it wont tolerate such things. dupers do what they do because they have a market. they have a market because the use of their product is condoned. dumping it on blizzard is all but saying we cant handle the responsibilty of saying no.

i guess i dont have much tolerance for things like the use of dupewords, but thats just my 2 cents.

I think you are wrong.Blizzard's aim is to have a legit/cheat-free realm. Many players don't really care where their items come from..dupes/bots/itemshops... and it is indeed Blizzards job to keep it clean.I stopped trading when the dupe went public at the end of nov 2006..but before that happened i did trade my stuff for high-runes.Players seem to have no uniques,no skillers,no socketables...nothing but loads of High runes.I went into a game "need Assa Torch-offer runes" and the fellow there gave me 2 ohms for a 15+/15+ assa torch...Should i say no?These runes turned into 2 Cta's for me one with +6bo,but these runes were definately dupes.I tried to trade skiller for skiller but all i get is high runes. The only chance to stop this is to stop trading...or Blizzard decides to do something about it.

As a point: it's hard to say if someone's legit or not these days.

If you trade, there's a decent chance that whatever you're trading for has been duped, botted, or traded for in receipt of a duped/botted item.

Pure legit: self-found no trade. Ever. That said, there's a trade window for a reason.

I have characters that are entirely self-found notrade; but I also have characters that are twinked to the teeth in unbelievable (and likely botted and/or rune-duped - for the runewords) equipment.

I hate duping, but I buy into it because I have an Enigma. I loathe botting, but I buy into it because I have a Stormshield that I traded for. I can't stand third-party software, but I buy into it because I accept Tps from (and Baal with) people who get to Throne in .3 seconds.

Does that make me a bad person?

So many of the once 'pure legit' people have succumbed to, well, build-filling. Oh, man, my trapper would be COMPLETE if I had a 15 ias 15 all res jewel to go in my claw. Gee, someone's offering one for a vex rune... hmm, how can I get vex? And you buy into it because you barter in questionable items.

It's a terribly jaded and cynical way to view the game, but hey, collective conscience. /end ramble

I'm pretty sure my Zon was level 95 when I broke down and got her CoH... after that, why not get an Infinity to replace Insight? ... etc etc.

When Blizzard chose not to reset the ladder, eventually, people who normally wouldn't 'cheat' got to the point where the game no longer had anything new to offer except the endless grind of trying to get to 99 or trying the overpowered (impossible to acquire through legitimate means) builds. There are a lot worse things in the game that using runes that you are 99% sure are duped... TPPK... scammers... townkill...

There used to be alot of fully legit characters around. I know somone might say that anytime you trade, you are taking a chance to get an item that is tainted (duped / botted), but the thing is there are times when you can trust people, especially some people who you play with often.

And even if the whole rune dupe thing is a 'dont ask dont tell' situation it is still really questionable to have build guides that basically require 3 lo's 4 bers, 2 vex's ect. ect.

I mean i know the game is old and all but it would just be nice if there was still some semblance of a forum that DISCOURAGES using duped items, as opposed to one that encourages it. I know its a tough situation and im not blaming anyone, but it just makes me a little sad.

Regardless of what blizzard says, they encourage duping. How else can you explain the mere existence of the last wish runeword. Many here are condemning those who advocate its use, but what purpose does it serve to exist if it is unattainable. Seriously, have you ever found 3 jahs, 1 mal, 1 sur, and 1 ber? How about in one ladder season to boot; I would think this would be impossible even if someone botted. I'm not saying duping (or botting) is right and I would never do it. But to trade for these items which blizzard passively condones (and by creation, encourages), I have no problem. This is merely concerning HRs, however. A game with such a heavy reliance on trading needs a currency, and gold is worthless. Blizzard, by structuring the mechanics, items, and gameplay the way they did, created this issue.

The old duped rares, bugged items and other similar exploits are another discussion altogether.

As for the original question: I think this forum is the last haven of good and decent people on battlenet.

Well, part of the answer has to do with the fact that throughout 1.09 one of the major complaints from the community was that hardly any high runes could actually be used to make runewords. The only high runes that had a runeword associated with them were Vex for 'Silence' and Jah for 'Fury' (Ist and Gul also if you consider them to have been high runes since they couldn't drop at Hellforge).

But realistically I can't disagree with your post.

I am one of the staunchest advocates of clean playing in the world, but honestly I kinda agree with this mentality. :undecided:

The only thing I can think of is that the reason these runewords are so powerful and nice is to truly reward the players who have played enough to legitimately collect the runes (which I agree are next to impossible in normal game play) with items that are Godly beyond Godly. If you played this game long enough to legitimately find or cube a Zod or three Jahs or what-have-you. . .then there BETTER be one hell of a runeword to make with them. Heck- I trip out when a 'Io' or a 'Hel' drops. . .

I have come to terms with the fact that I will probably never have a Last Wish or any of those type runewords because I simply refuse to break-down and trade for a duped rune. Now if by some sheer wild blind luck a HR just falls in my lap in normal play, then HELL YEA I'm making a BotD or Last Wish. But it will definately be my most prized Diablo II item. In fact. . .It would take me almost as long to find a socketed item that would be 'worthy' of making a ultra-runeword in.

So until then I'll just keep cubing El's and Eth's and dreaming. . .:dizzy:

There is still honest people out there, but I stopped trading for any rune higher than lem. What I do is cubing and cubing again. Has come up to Ber, Ohm, and some lesser, which has taken a lot of time. Best drop in 1.11 is vex, vex, gul. (not the same time, quite spaced out in time)
Reason not to cheat, well begin and then get yourself maphack and all the other "tools" and at the same time destroy the pleasure of playing a good game.

I remember Xey and Sip tried making an infinity from "scratch" when this ladder season started. I know they cubed up enough runes for 1 ber, not sure about the other. That said, this forum is one for the more vocal groups for clean gaming, but most of them have found something more engagin in life then wishing for the ladder to reset.

Banana phone anyone?

One of the guys in the banana channel actually found a Ber while Meph running, so Xey and Sip traded him a mint for it because it was legit.

Yea, it was funny watching how crazy those two got about that infinity, it was a shame to see it disappear when Khayla died.

Hmm, I haven't seen my Banana Phone anywhere Mr. H I think I may have lost it in the move, sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Cheers
