Is the orb-it-all-er sorceress build still viable?

A couple of years ago, when I last played D2 on EU-ladder normal i had loads of fun with the build advertised by a player, a good chap named Socialism.

I had a blast with it (literally) and right now it is probably the only thing i might remember in regards to playing the game in an appropriate fashion(i'm not a very handy person), since the build, from what i recall(and i promise i'll look up the specs right after this post) used frozen orb and fireball, relying mainly on frozen orb for the killing with the fire spec being backup.

From what I can remember regarding this wonderful game, the sorc was the ideal starter character, since it was somewhat less dependent on itemisation, and it was faster than the fishymancer(in my first days of d2 online, fishymancers were hated because of the lag :) ), being able to teleport and accumulate wealth through endless grinds, killing meph and andy and collecting keys and whatnot.

How much has changed since those times have passed? I personally went from almost no baal runs done by bots to only-bot baal runs, bots being the best runners in the beginning, and the worst in the end, with human-made baal runs being highly sought-after( I used to pretend i was a bot because of how good my runs were, it was only a joke since all the bots were hammerdins).

Also, from what I read, undead and demon monsters possessing magical immunity no longer have that immunity ignored by the blessed hammers, has this killed the hammerdin as the highly contested king of mf runs?

And last but not least...are people still playing this game online :( ? I heard rumors that the number of players has greatly diminished, I plan on working again on the EU normal ladder. Should I look towards a different gateway/realm(how did that work BTW?)?

So there you have it, a comeback post from an old noob. Please forgive the critting wall of text...it's easy for me to get enthusiastic.Hope you'll find my questions to bring a smile to your face and a helpful thought in your mind. To your good health!

My main mf-er is still a orb-it-all'er. I'd claim that they still work fine :)

SIngleplayer only though, can't realy comment on the bot ration online. But i fear that it is high, very high.

The orber is definitely a viable "noob" build, as it is not overly gear dependant. You should have no problem running andy/trav/meph/even chaos/diablo if you ignore the cold immunes. Key running may be a little tricky due to certain key holders and/or some of their minions being cold immune, but a merc with any decent high dmg weapon should be able to take those out.

Yes the hammerdins can no longer damage magical immune monsters, however due to the overall lack of magic immune monsters in common MF areas this has done little to ruin the hammerdin as we know it. The only problem hammerdins have now is killing the 2nd wave of minions during baal runs. When you make it to hell you will still see that 10-15 out of every 25 games open are bots, if not more.
