Is Multiboxing cheating?

Re: Is Multiboxing cheating?

I don't think it's cheating, as long as no programs are used to let the characters do anything (aka bots).

I'm doing it for safer muling. Also, when I'm doing quests with my main characters, I have two mules in the game in addition, for additional hellforge and socketing rewards and to have mules which can enter any act in any difficulty.

It works with separate game key sets only and I doubt that those from key generators will work on bnet.

This is the first time I heard of multiboxing, what does it do?
So do I. Oh, no wonder! Its a MMORPG term :unimpressed:

...Multiboxing is a term used mostly in MMORPGs to refer to playing as multiple separate characters simultaneously. This can either be achieved by using multiple separate machines to run the game or by running multiple separate instances of the game...
I use the fist option as I run a virtual machine via vmware player, the other option couldnt be feasible on bnet, right krischan? Or you use something like Sandboxie?

Re: Is Multiboxing cheating?

you can do it on one windows machine if you have 2 cd keys, but its really annoying and not very useful

you create two login accounts on your computer
install one game under one account
install the other game in a different folder under the other account

login to your pc, start the game
then "switch user". login with your other account, start the game

so you have two windows logins going on at once, each with its own game, and you switch back and forth between them

it is so much easier just to have a cheap $400 laptop and put your 2nd copy of diablo on that
of course not everybody can afford a 2nd pc

It's only for muling and helping myself with quests/WP. No other third party D2 programs involved. Trading is soooo muchhhh easier(where is that shako?!??!) when multiboxing ^^

I'm using Sandboxie for the second instance (which is enough for muling) and a separate Windows account for the third (when rushing mules), as Sandboxiee only allows one sandbox when using it for free, as I do.

So does this mean i cant have a sandbox on one user account and another sanbox on another user account? I would be nice to be logged in with 4 chars....

Krischan specifically mentioning "Sandboxie" and "using it for free" ... in other words you can probably run multiple sandboxes with that program if you have a payed/full version.

You might be able to find another free programs without that limitation. Never used any multiboxing programs for running diablo myself, so cannot give any recommendations.

I'll highlight a thing I found useful back when I used xp user switching to run 2 copies:

I can just recommend it, you can have another Diablo window on the same screen which is very useful for muling, in particular together with Adria ;)

Does anybody know another sandbox program like that?

Re: Is Multiboxing cheating?

Another thing.

I happen to have 4 sets of CD keys.
I was thinking about doing the following.
On my main user account i would run 1 copy normally and 1 sandboxed. Then i would create 2 other user accounts and run 1 copy on each of them... Would this be possible?

Don't even need 2 computers.

Just use fast user switching and two valid CD-Keys.

I no longer have to deal with the fear that I'll lose my valuable stuff muling.

Re: Is Multiboxing cheating?

I've been using fast user switching for quite some time now and it gets the job done. It can be a little clunky and slow compared to having both windows open right there side-by-side, but it works. I have finally started (as in, last weekend ) messing with the whole virtual machine thing (VirtualBox) for software testing, and have a D2 setup on an XP VM I can use to multibox, but I'm not used to it yet, so when I need to open up another instance, my fingers hit 'WinKey+L' before I can even think about it! ;)

I had some bad issues with getting my Fast User Switching to work right at first, the other account would lock up on boot. I could 'Ctrl+Alt+Del' fine, but beyond that, total freeze. I stumbled upon some info about explorer.exe crashing (I'm using XP on my main as well, btw), and saw a recommendation of terminating the explorer process on the locked up account, then going back to the 'Applications' tab, clicking 'New Task...' at the bottom and typing in explorer.exe. A bit clunky, but worked like a charm! I still have to do that every time I fire up the other account, but it works fine until I shut down my computer. Thought I'd mention it in case you or anyone else has an issue with that.

To the OP, if multiboxing is wrong, I don't want to be right!

No, seriously, if I couldn't run 2 instances, I would never even touch bnet ever again.

Re: Is Multiboxing cheating?

It would annoy me to no end to see the explorer crashing all the time! You should really get that fixed or use a sandbox program. It's far less awkward to use than switching to other Windows accounts and probably uses less resources than starting a virtual machine.

Re: Is Multiboxing cheating?

It doesn't crash all the time exactly. Basically, when I first fire up a second account account after booting the comp, it crashes, but after that it's totally fine until I reboot the system and do it all over again. Otherwise, it's smooth sailing.

That said, I am planning on using the VM. As soon as I can consistently remember to use it. :p

Re: Is Multiboxing cheating?

Given the neolithic nature of item storage on D2 I can only see multiboxing as a way to ease the very significant pain of bnet muling.

And it means you can self rush and share wps. Super. And some other useful stuff like opening the cow level for another char to enter, etc.

Re: Is Multiboxing cheating?

No. If you have friends on D2, they can help you with muling, forge rushing, etc. If you have a second computer, you can do the same thing yourself. Therefore, anyone who opposes this type of activity is simply prejudiced against poor (can't afford second computer) and friendless players. And what kind of jerk doesn't want to let poor people without friends help themselves?
