Is it worth it to play 100% legit?

Is it worth it to play 100% legit?

I've just started playing D2 again (3rd time coming back lol). This time it's a bit different, I am playing EHCL now, the previous times are softcore. Just to keep the topic short, I am currently playing legit, that means all my gears are either self-found or traded from a trusted source. My gears are pretty decent, but my chars and mercs still lack the killing speed of the powerful rune words and the ability to do rushing in hell. Currently, I don't have any hrs, but i have items that can be traded for it. Should I play totally legit (meaning only use none-dupe stuff including runes) or just accept that dupe exists like so many other people do? What do you think?

I'd say it's a matter of complete personal preference. I have characters that are no-trade/no-twink that play in private games and only private games.

I have a character that wears an unholy Enigma Archon Plate.

I have a mule with 2 infinities on it, for a disgusting trapper and lightning sorceress that I've been putting off making.

I trade on another forum that is notorious for its 1337 haxxors -- there are daily reports of Mara's Kaleidoscopes being 'found' (botted, no less).. and to complete builds, I'll sometimes indulge in a bit of trading there.

Some characters stay virgins, some characters are whored out to the best equipment I can get - (questionable) sources be damned.

Sources are damned, too, because few are ever going to admit to trading you a duped item. "Oh yeah that SOJ was a dupe that I worked on last week... no no it won't poof! Of course not! It's perm I guarantee you 110% LEGIT! Truusssst meeeeee preciousssss yessss...."

To maintain the integrity of my builds/characters, I play them untwinked up to a certain point; level 75, guardian, or whatever. Then when I *know* I can do the build self-found, I'll dump an Enigma, CTA, Beast, and Pride on to it, and just cackle at the speed at which I cruelly exploit AI and game mechanics.

Meh, it's something new. It's hard to find groups of people who play through; everyone's usually begging for a CHANT PLZ or a GRUSH ME KEKE or the ever popular YO U GOT CHAOS ME?

Sorry, I think 20% of the way into this post, I started rambling and lost my train of thought.

In any event. Sometimes it's nice to have a ridiculous kill-everything character, sometimes it's nice to pick up every rare you find. I greatly prefer the latter, but few people are up for gaming through like that...

Answer: Sure, it's worth it to play 100% legit characters. Do so, frequently. But it's also fun to have some characters with 1337 itAmz. It's all up to your own personal integrity and what you want to accomplish in the game (if anything). Most folks nowadays are just futzing around... there are a precious few that are still grail or 99 hunting... and they typically don't play 'legit.'

If you have to ask you're already too far gone...

I usually play legit for a season... until it gets tiresome. I was legit until well into this past season (fairly recently, actually) when my Baal Sorc had a few too many close calls; I decided to trade for an Ohm to make CtA. Since my cherry had already been popped, I figured I might as well get a Sur and another Ohm to make 'Bramble' for my Poison/Summon Necro. Then I blew a bunch of wealth on high runes just for a fun build (WW/Zerk Hybrid Barb). It was fun, I used a bunch of duped runes, I pwned, and then I died... I don't regret it.

Just do whatever you have the most fun with. I prefer to avoid dupes, and if you decide to go the same route that's great. But, for me at least, playing 100% legit starts to become boring after a certain point. Maybe if Blizzard would reset the friggin' ladder...

Hey PT :) Want a legit SOJ? kekeke. I gieb u gieb 775 nigma k?

Edit: honestly, I'm kind of sickened by everything. At this point, there's no more real competitive edge (I haven't pvp'd since 1.10) for me.

Look at the contents of my "in search of" post at another trading site:
- 15 ias / 15 all res jewel
- Perfect Harlequin Crest
- Perfect Flail HOTO (Eth/whatever)
- 15/15 Sandstorm Treks (Eth/whatever) or 10 FHR / 30++ light/fire res rare boots
- Shimmering Grand Charm of Balance (15 all res 12 FHR)
- 5 FHR / 10+ fire res SC
- 5 FHR / 10+ light res SC
- 20% absorb Wisp (don't care enough to pay for MF)

I can't imagine a single one of those items not having a 95% chance of being botted. Except, of course, the runeword; which likely has a 1/10 chance of being self-found (it's tough, but actually quite do-able in just a few hours... gul gul vex!).

Am I ashamed? Not really. I'm too disconnected and cynical and sort of uncaring about it to be ashamed that I use most-likely botted itamz.

It gets boring when you see everyone else around you do 20x your damage using 1/15th your skill/knowledge -- and you just can't catch up.

Right. I should have been a little clearer with my words.

I don't think "boring" was the right word to use either. It's more a matter of frustration and curiousity. Most of us know from experience that you don't need any of those dupewords to kill well and make successful characters, but what if you did use them? Maybe your Hammerdin would be even godlier, and maybe that variant build that didn't really work out so well could be viable again.

OFC is the only guy I know that's 100% legit.

thx for the advice guys. The main reasons that I am wondering if i should trade for those dupe runes are:

1) My meteorb sorce with some decent gear, but somehow, was not able to do a full hell rush in less than 1/2 an hour. she has 75% resists and max block, 105fcr and about +8 to skills and still kill really slow.

2) without enigma it's just not the same for my other char. Just can't enjoy the hammerdin and singer barb that much

3) during baal runs I am usually the leecher rather than one of the baalers.

4) for hardcore, who won't want more powerful items? by this I mean you would want to be able to take a few shots from powerful monsters, not to mention those potential pk idiots

So I guess I'll just pimp a char or two when I am gettin sick and tire of being a leecher in baal games and keep having fun with legit chars when I want a challenge.

And the Winner is - Trumpet !!!

Yes - It's true Im probably one of the only legit people left . OFC - Old Farts Clan are still a legit , no hack , no pk clan .. I think I have traded for only a handful of runes and items in the past 5 years . And then only from people I know from here - NO one Traded me Doopes did they ??

But I play with a couple friends and we actually play the game . From normal act1 to act5 hell because it's fun . Sometimes we do minor rushes like give wp's or something but usually we do all the quests on all 3 levels ..

It makes me sad to read most of the posts now days as people openly talk about their duped items and even the builds section sticky these . I still get much enjoyment from finding the unique rarely found item or rune . TO me this is how the game should be played . To each his own I guess but I'll play legit until they close the Bnet servers down I guess ..

Good to get props!

It's good to see legit gaming still gets a little respect every now and then.
In my opinion, DII has been ruined by cheats/hacks/dupes. I even stopped trading here on the dii.net forums because I was starting to see or get the feeling that a lot of dupes were going around here.

Now we find about 99% of our stuff, and we trade only with people we know would not trade us duped/hacked items.

It doesn't take much skill to beat the game with dupes. Anyone can do it.
It takes skill and much more to get a level 90+ HC character without using cheats or dupes.

BTW, we like legit teamwork too!

BTW, OFC isn't one person, it's a clan of legit gamers.

Thanks for the props.

One of the amazing thing in this game is mf. Just a few nights ago, I was nm baaling my tristram pally and guess what? Found a shako, 49 wartrav and pcombat charm on the same night. That was awesome. I only traded a few items with others from this forum, but found most of my gear. I am proud to say that my legit cherry still haven't been popped yet. Waiting for the right moment

right now I am trying to beat tristram with legit items and no rune words greater than a lum rune. If you guys are interested here is my lvl 87 pally's gear:

guilliame's face
rare +1 pally and 14 reisist ammy
99% pdiamonded resist all zakarum sheild
smoke armor
raven frost
d-star
string of ear
rare glove
gore
lightsabre
lifetapped wand and spirited shield on switch
lots of stacked resists
ar/max/life charms

It would be great to hangout with a legit group. Let me know if you guys are interested in playing together.

Everyone who has been around long enough knows, the opening weeks of a Hardcore ladder season are the best. No one has ridiculous gear, close calls around every corner, every find bringing on that adrenaline rush like you hit the lottery, everyone playing together in order to take down bosses, the loss of a teammate hurts...in general, the game is challenging and fun, and creates an experience that really no other game, including WoW, has come close to yet.

Damn I cannot wait till the ladder resets.

A 30 minute hell legit rush is NOT a bad thing. My hell rusher hammerdin, Durable, whose only traded items are an Enigma and a perfect %ed Hotspur (that's right folks, self-found arachnid's mesh), runs with 125fcr (same frame cast as your 105%), and can do it in ~15 minutes - sure - but keep in mind that there's only 1 hammer-immune monster (I don't even deal with it), blessed hammer damage is freaking CRAZY (11k), and I cheat. That is, I'll make the game with an a1 hell mule, clear all the relevant parts solo (area around Trav, Chaos, Baal's minions) before I do the run.

Seriously, MILK legitness for all it's worth. Once you stop being 100% legit, things get so much less fun.

Remember how happy you were when you found that Harlequin Crest?

If you start trading stuff with randoms who likely have duped itamz etc., -- you'll never feel that way again.

I've been playing classic and almost flipped out when I saw a spectral shard drop. That's how I like to game :)

I play untwinked/notrade when I play with friends who do the same. It's never fun to be the leecher; should I stay untwinked if the other guy has a vipermagi, peasant crown, 2x SOJs, and 2 spirits on?

I definitely know how it feels lol, when nm baal drop it the other night. It just made my night right there. To top it off, a few runs later, wartrav drops. It does give you a lot of joy and pride to use stuff that you've found.

Oh yeah, forgot to brag lol. Just did tristam last night and found a 15/10 sorce torch. That's another adrenalin rush.

I think I am going to stay legit as long as i can.

Socialisms right.

Ask anyone around here, I've never been able to drop the habit. Years and years of D2 fighting the good fight legitly, refining my builds and forging good friendships.

Then I gave in and started using another forum to buy some gear for a few chars I liked and it snowballed. Now I have no desire to play the game anymore because it isn't a challenge, there's no feeling of worth to the time.

Cherish legitness, don't take the easy road or you'll lose all love for this game and just become a lurking forum-junkie

well, the main thing for me is the teleport obsession. mf find is great part of my game, but without teleport, I am not very efficient. Thus, this means I am limited to playing a sorceress, but there'll always be the the lucky jah and ber that can drop some day (I wish).

Now that my my sorce has an anni and a torch, I think I am going to enjoy it even more :)

Well put. And I'm the reverse of your situation. When I played HC Classic back then, I played using MH (Still never used Chicken....defeats purpose of HC). After a few years of break, I am back playing D2, but not as much as before. This time around I am not making that mistake of using programs. Just have fun, play to play. And in doing so, you attract the same type of players onto your friend's list, which is perfect.

I can tell you if I did start using loaders, MH, and what not, this game would get dull again right away.
