Is botting justified?

A question not easily answered by some. I myself have the obvious answer:
“no, of course it’s not, no hack can be truely jusitified.â€

Personally, I remain as 'legit' as I can be, but am not so uncompromising that I would leave a game if a maphacker entered it. I’ve grown to tolerate hacks around me, some more than others. Some are benign, while others are malignant, but no hack is “good†by any means.

This brings us to botting, the very severe form of hacking that has become more and more prevelant throughout the realms… Why bot at all? I have been down the bad road before, and I know that botting is not necessary to have exceptional gear or characters. But lately, many of my friends and acquaintances have either started botting, or continued with their old bad habit. It has put me in quite a moral dilemma... and as much as I try to keep an open mind and here all arguments, I still cannot give a solid answer to the question: Is botting justified?

  • Argument One:
I am an advocate of high level dueling. In order to keep up with the competition (who by the way, are 99.5% botters), I must use a bot myself. The gear I find with it, however, will only be traded publically if a friend doesn’t protest. I know I’m hurting other players indirectly with my botting, but I am protecting myself from getting hurt indirectly by other botters. Even though I am a nice person most of the time, and help my friends out a lot, is my botting jusitified?

  • Argument Two:
I use a bot while I sleep to collect all of the gear necessary to fully equip my characters (in a fraction of the time). I am a benevolent person by nature, and I help all of my friends as much as I can. If someone needs help, I’ll usually speak up and assist them. The gear acquired through botting that I have no use for will be either traded away for high runes, or given to friends. Am I justified in my botting?

  • Argument Three:
I am botting in order to help out my group of friends with items that they need. 75% of the items I’ve found with my bot have gone to other people. Friends come first. Is my botting for a good cause justified?

  • Argument Four:
My account was broken into and I lost everything. I was prepared to quit – I had nothing anymore. I didn’t want to spend the time to rebuild everything from scratch, so a good friend introduced me to botting. I used it to get myself back on my feet with a decent item base. All the items I don’t need are given away to friends. Am I justified?

As much as I’d like Blizzard to do something about the botting issue (800+ waiting line-ups on west and east – ugh!), I doubt that they will. Besides, I believe botting is all client-side, making it very difficult for blizzard to detect it (much like maphack).

Nothing will stop people from botting except their own morality. It is unfortunate that they feel it’s necessary to cheat in order to prosper in a game. In that respect, Diablo is not so different than real life; a lot of people will do almost anything to get ahead in life. It’s a fact. And as dreadful as it may sound, nothing is going to change any time soon.

So, is botting commonplace? Yes. Is it justified? I’ll leave that for you to decide.
