Iron Chef America

I dunno how many other Iron Chef fans are around here, but the first episode of Iron Chef America just aired (will be rebroadcast all weekend if you missed it).

Getting Kaga's nephew was a nice touch, but the poor guy clearly doesn't have a theater background. He looked a bit overwhelmed by everything, and nowhere near as... erm... "flamboyant" as Kagasan.

Alton Brown was good except that he kept forgetting to involve the guests in the commentary.

All in all, they did a good job of keeping all the elements that made the original show so good, although it was really strange hearing everything in original English without overdubbing.

PS: did they have to use Bobby Flay? I know he's good, but he's such a jerk. Bleah.

I don't imagine that I'd enjoy this show very much since the most appealing thing about the original show was the "Japaneseness". I liked to hear their crazy manner of speaking :)

This is not the one with William Shatner. This is the new one with Kaga's nephew. Check your local listings, it'll be on again very soon, and repeated throughout the weekend.

Good Eats is hosted by Alton Brown. Is Good Eats relevant to this discussion?

The Shatner one was the suxors.
But seriously, they ruined the show with those two specials. The original was great partly because of the food that the chefs made. Who doesn't get a kick out of a chef turning shark heads into beautiful cuisine! The specials focused on the people, and the food just sort of appeared at the end.

And who can replace those Japanese judges!

ICA definitely lacked some of the ridiculous Japanese flair, but I still found it enjoyable. The food looked more or less the same to me. I think Sakai got robbed by the judges, though.

I'm looking forward to tonight: Morimoto vs Batali. Wierdly enough I have eaten at both their restaurants in NYC. Morimoto's was alot better.

I couldn'T beLIEve that my boy Sakai lost that one. We all got loaded and watched the play by play last night. Sakai is 83 and 7 (now 83 and 8). The man is a genius. Did you see him skin that apple?

craziness.

The "nephew" is 'aight i guess...he did some cool ninja action with that chinese sword in his intro. I miss the feather boa though...

The one tonight will rock too. I love cable tv!

Not to bust your cherry, but Kaga is an actor, and the chairman of IC America is also just an actor. Not a nephew (gimick.)

However, Iron Chef is one of my favorite shows ever, and I am sad to have missed tonite's battle. Good thing food network is repeating these all week.

Also Alton Brown is the man. The MAN, you must respect him.

I'm inclined to believe that the guy really is Kaga's nephew, because he's obviously a really bad actor. He looks so nervous doing that stuff you can almost imagine him thinking to himself "Hey! Everyone's looking at me! Why is everybody looking at me?"

Almost any actor with a real theater background could have re-created Kaga's flamboyance without any problem and with little effort.

Oh yeah, and I've always been an Alton fan. His regular show is hilarious! :)

I do think his commentary is a bit of, not because of anything he's doing, but because of how they have things set up. He should have a co-announcer and two guests with him like they did on the old show.

You think so? I thought Batali won that one fair and square; at least, his food looked better to me.

Ditto on Kaga's nephew being his real nephew. No one ACTS that poorly. It must be real.
