    IP Address Help

    My friend is asking me if I can find her IP adress when she is IMing me, and I said I know there is a way but I don't know how.

    I remember someone saying something about opening up a dos window and typing netscape -n or something like that. Can someone walk me step by step through it.

    Thanks, and I haven't been here for a few weeks but do we have new smileys?

    It's netstat -n
    The -n is just a way of organizing the results i think.
    There's another way, but I just boot up MS-Dos prompt and type it in.

    I'm computer illiterate - how do I open up a DOS window? or that MS-DOs prompt thingy.

    Start -> Run -> cmd

    However, I am not convinced that that method will give you your external IP (i.e. the one you use to connect to the internet).

    I typed in CMD - but it gave me an error prompt that it couldn't find CMD.

    then try command rather than cmd.

    Your windows version may help the resident problem solvers though.

    Windows ME

    Edit: command works

    It gives me c:\windows>desktop or something like that. Now when I talk to her do I type "Netscape -n" right after it?

    -n just makes Netstat display connected ip addresses in numerical form. Just running netstat will display the DNS name, if any, instead of the ip address.

    You'll need to figure out which port(s) the IM program uses so that you can distinguish the connection to her from the other 10 or so connections you've likely got up. Either that or do the netstat before you talk to her and during so you can compare and see which connection is new.

    I have a list of IP adresses now but I can't tell which one is hers and which one isn't. I'm running on one phone line and I'm not looking at sites or whatever. Just talking to her so that would cut my connections down right? But none of the connections changed IP's I did it before I talked to her and while I saw her "typing ...." and no number changes.

    Jesus christ does no one ever use google anymore? People really need to start learning how to type 3 freakin words in and get their answer, not come here with their stupid questions.
