Introduction to World Religions

This isn't the typical religion thread, so don't crap your Huggies.

I just finished my final exam in my Introduction to World Religions course. I gotta say, this course was the most informative and most enlightening course I have taken in my two years at college. I strongly recommend taking a course like this if any of you get a chance. It's so fascinating to see the connections between religions which from the outside seem so different. It's also extremely interesting to see the effects other religions have on certain religions, such as Zoroastrianism on Judaism and Christianity. Very enlightening, indeed.

Cheers!

I believe that the study of religion, as an athiest, is still important. While I may not agree with religion I do see it's benefit to many people. I think that The Holy Bible, for instance, is fiction, but the stories it portrays teach a sense of moral code. I just can't see myself devoting any more then that to a blind faith. Must be my age.. ;)

Yes, and another interesting aspect of the course was how those certain moral codes of certain holy texts/religions are seen in many other religions. I love it.

I would have to say that after this course I would consider myself either agnostic or neo-atheist. I don't know which...yet. Still trying to figure it out. But hey, that's what life is about, isn't it? Figuring out what you believe and why you believe it *for yourself.*

I agree one hundred percent. I really feel sorry for a girl in my school. She was practicing her Catholic Communion, however the only reason she is going through with it is because her parents are making her. It's quite sad to have a religion forced upon you. If there is one thing I hate in this world it's people who tote their religion around and feel the need to include it whenever they can.

Edit: I'm a born Catholic, yet the only reason I did my Communion was to get all the money from my Evangelistic relatives. Crazy Catholics! ;)

I was born Catholic as well. I have a lot of respect for Catholic theology, I think it's very intriguing to study. Thankfully my parents aren't slamming it down my throat, they know that I'm a good person naturally and that I need to do what I feel is right for me to do. I too feel sorry for people who are forced to practice something in which they do not believe. I know some people my age or younger who are kind of miserable. But I also know some people who are religious who are so nice and have never forced anything upon me. There are so many different types of religious people. My belief is this: I will treat you with respect and see you as a human being living in the same world as me, just do the same for me. In other words, let's just be :buddies:

Okay. I'm the one on the right.

I was a religion major in college for pretty-much the same reason. I just figured that rather than being a knee-jerk anything, I'd delve into Nietzsche and the Torah at the same time and figure out what, if anything, I liked from each side of the coin and blended into a wonderful mix of 6 major religions and philosophies. Now some may say, "6!? You only need MAYBE 2!"

Well, I'm not into the moderation thang with my karma, ya dig? Aristotle must be SO totally buggin' out in his like grave.

Something I found very interesting during my 2 semesters of Sociology is the number of Western holidays (jewish and christian) that correspond with the oldest Earth Mother Reliogns of past. The big example is Hanukkah/Christmas, the earliest people held an 8 day Party that ended on what would've been the 26th of December celebrating the start of return of the sun to the northern hemisphere. If you really like the Religion class take a look into the pagen/earth religions, and do a side by side time line of celebrations/holidays you might be very surprised.
