Introducing Patriarch Skeletorio (and myself)

Hi All!

My name is Dale, and I just came back to D2 a few months ago after about 10 years away (with ALL of my great items lost due to a hard drive death along the way). After reading some of the Mat/Pat/Guardian threads, I decided this would be a good way to introduce myself AND my first patriarch since coming back to the game. :)

Patriarch Skeletorio, Fishymancer

This won't be terribly organized, since I don't remember much of Skeletorio's time in Normal at all and, frankly, he was so safe throughout most of the game that I was almost bored with him until I got well into Hell.

Skeletorio (I stink at naming characters, sorry) was my first ever necromancer patriarch, really the first necro I've ever played beyond Nightmare. Since I was getting back into the game and needed a safe character who could MF a bit to get himself and other characters up and running, the Fishymancer build seemed like the way to go, using a few items found by the Meteorb and Frenzier I had started at the same time as well. I had read Fishy's guide and decided to mimic his build. However, although I shared his disgust with Skeletal Mages, I found that I liked Revives even less and I wasn't wild about Iron or Fire golems, either, so I re-specced to have max Skeletons with full Skeleton Mastery, plus maxed CE, and an insane amount of Golem Mastery for my Clay Golem. My gumby doesn't do any noticeable damage, but he's super-sturdy and his slowing effect is a HUGE benefit to my army, especially in instances when I'm also using Decrepify instead of Amp Damage. I wound up NEVER using Life Tap at all, and only used Lower Resist during my brief experience with Skelemages; I took LR again when I re-specced just in case a situation would come up where I needed it to do CE damage to an unbreakable Physical Immune or something, but I never ran into anything of the sort.

I found that I really like Attract. While it's true that the monsters don't do enough damage to kill each other beyond Normal, anything directing their attacks AWAY from my merc and skellies is effectively extra defense. Any damage the monsters did to each other was just a bonus.

Skeletorio was ALMOST my first character to get through the game without a death; a couple of nasty Succubi boss packs in the Frozen River combined to destroy my merc and skellies, leaving me easy pickings, even with my 1000+ life. Suffered two deaths from that, but no others throughout the whole game. That's definitely a first for me!

I got lucky with some good maps in Act 1 for Pit running, Countess runs, and Andariel runs (if I even want to bother). My Black Marsh waypoint is dead center between the Tower and the Pit entrance, so I can quickly and easily run one, TP, waypoint back, and do the other, which will probably be what Skeletorio does going forward. As for Andariel, if I want to do her, it's a total two teleports and no combat to get from the Catacombs 2 waypoint to the stairs down to Catacombs 4. Even though Andy hardly seems worthwhile, the map is so convenient it almost feels like a waste not to take advantage of it. Especially since my Hell Durance map is as bad as it could possibly be (Waypoint as far northeast as the level goes, the stairs to Durance 3 as far southwest as the map goes) :D

I don't recall the Normal and Nightmare HF drops, but I got an Um in Hell. I'll take it, especially since it replaced the one that I had stuck in my circlet.

Hell Ancients needed to be re-rolled twice, both times because two of the three spawned with Stone Skin. Although breakable, they were still resisting so much of my army's damage that we couldn't make any headway before everybody eventually dropped and I had to go scrounging around the Halls of Pain courtyard the first time and the Frigid Highlands the second to assemble a new mob of skellies. Third time was the charm, with no Stone Skins, and they were no problem.

As you can see, I certainly didn't have fantastic gear, although for relying mostly on low-and-mid-level runewords and rares, it wasn't terrible. I kept Spellsteel on my switch for the teleport charges, and of course, gambled an amulet with tele charges on it from Anya right after defeating Hell Baal.

All in all, this was the easiest character I've ever played, but the lack of danger makes it one of the least fun, as well. Maybe a bonemancer or golemancer will be more to my liking, so I'm adding both to the long list of future projects.
