Indefinite Chronology

We all know of at least one series that was released in an order inconsistent with it's internal chronology. The Star Wars movies are probably the best known example of this. Four through six were made and released first, and now they're making one through three.

In cases like this I believe its usually better to read or watch the series in the order in which it's elements were made, not in chronological order. Consider the Chronicles of Narnia. I can't recall the exact order, but I know the books were writen out of chronological order. I got them in the boxed set that way and read them that way. Recently I've seen boxed sets in bookstores that pack them in chronological order. I think this is a poor way to read the books. I shall again turn to Star Wars to explain why.

Imagine if you had watched the first three episodes before you saw four through six. One, you'd be extremely disappointed with the skill that Vader, Luke and Obi Wan displayed as Jedi. Two, one of the biggest suprises in the series, Vader being revealed to be Luke's father, will be no suprise. Third, I believe that, in general, the knowledge that is brought from watching one through three will result in a drastically different experience watching four through six than was had by those of us who watched four through six first.

And if you think about it, four through six really contains the introductory knowledge for the series. One through three were written for people in a world where the original trilogy was already well known.

Thoughts, accolades, derogatory remarks?

Better idea: Watch 4-6, don't watch 1-3 because they suck. Suck hard. Or will, in the case of #3.

Everything else I agree with.

well surely they must have had some redeeming qualities...

hmm... episode 1...

uhhh... podracing?
nah, but Liam Neeson dies

episode 2...

well, I guess for the Natalie Portman fans there was something, I got nothing out of her perfomance tho

umm... the annoying mom dies

episode 3

they did so little in the first 2 I'm hard pressed to figure how they can cram everything into #3, they have to kill all the jedi, screw around with more political puke, create the entire star wars world as we know it from almost the ground up, in two hours

lucas is boned

Actually, as I understand it, they're relying on the Clone Wars series on Cartoon Network to fill in a large gap between two and three. That may not be true, but that's what I've heard.

Edit: But rather than bashing the new Star Wars movies, which everyone can agree do not live up to the originals, I wanted to talk about series that were written out of order and the merits of reading them in the order in which they were written verses chronological order. But I won't be here for a few hours anyway, so feel free to digress.

All nine stories were written at the same time; only the screen plays were writtten in 4-6, 1-3 order. But I understand what you're saying, and I agree.

Actually, the Chronicles of Narnia are in chronological order, except for one. What the oddball does is explain where the White Witch, the lamp-post, and wardrobe came from.
