ilvl vs mlvl

ilvl vs mlvl

alrighty, relating to another thread put out today that people are suspicious about the item-

in the atma readout, when it says ilvl, does this immediately indicate mlvl? from the other thread 'there are no montsers with a lvl of 93 in 1.10 final' and 'all items dropped from hell baal should be ilvl 99', etc. Does that mean that anything baal drops in hell is automatically ilvl 99, regardless of it's tc and normal/excpt/elite status?

I guess basically I'm looking for a short, concise tutorial on the relation of ilvl, mlvl and tc...I realize certain game areas can drop any tc, and that some items can only be found with x, y, z superunique/boss, but that's as far as I can get at the moment. also, i wanted to have this discussion outside of a thread that might end badly, even if it sparked my interest a bit in the technical side of things, i.e., let's not relate back to that post any more than necessary.

Thanks all!

My basic understanding of this means that, yes, all items dropped by Baal should be ilvl99.

Baal will only drop items of that ilvl in Hell.

I look forward to more in-depth replies

ilvl: Item level, stored with an item. This property only ever changes when the item does (certain cube recipes, imbuing), but it is fixed at the time of spawning.

If a monster drops an item it will have ilvl = mlvl. The TC of the item is irrelevant, since all items from a monster will have ilvl = mlvl... be they Quilted Armour or Sacred Armour.

(So yes, any item from Hell Baal will have ilvl = 99)

The TC affects the base item types that can drop. So a Fallen (who can drop TC3) can drop Quilted Armour in white, grey, blue and yellow versions.

All Unique and Set items, however, have a special attribute (qlvl) which is the minimum item level required to find that item. So a Fallen (mlvl 1) can't drop a Greyform (qlvl 10), but could happily drop you a rare Quilted Armour instead.

Ilvl doesn't always mean mlvl.

Gambled items have ilvl within the range clvl +4/-5 (at the time of gambling).

Shopped items have ilvl = clvl +5.

Anya's quest reward items have ilvl = clvl (? Not sure here)

Items from chests have ilvl = area level. (Check an area level guide for those)

That's about it... if I missed something or it doesn't make sense that's because it's 2am here :)

*edit*

In response to the request in the other thread... monster levels of significance:

110: Super-Diablo (can't spawn in SP, but just so you know :) )
99: Hell Baal
98: Hell Nihlathak (he's an odd one... he's a boss type of Nihlathak...)
94: Hell Diablo
**: Level 85 area Bosses and minions, including Baal's Minions (H). Apparently Hell Duriel is level **... which is one level higher than Hell Meph! Bizarre.
87: Lvl 84 area Bosses & minions, and Lvl 85 area Champions - also Hell Mephisto
85: Regular monsters in level 85 areas - the highest level 'normal', non-boss, monsters. Also the highest ilvl possible from chests etc.
75: Hell Andariel and NM Baal.
62: NM Diablo
59: NM Meph

This isn't a comprehensive list but rather 'edited highlights'.

So on the magic pre/surfix page of arreat summit, the number behind each one is the minimum ilvl needed for an item to spawn it? (such as: Cruel +201-300% Damage Weapons(51)) So if I were to reroll a charm with a number of (50) behind it, I'd better use one with ilvl just above 50 to maximize my chance of getting it, right?

Some are, some aren't. Their numbering system is inconsistent (sometimes they have clvl req. listed instead). Try www.d2data.net instead - their data is probably better in that area.

The other factor in affix determination is the Affix level of an item, which is calculated from the Item Level and the base item type's Quality Level.

Formula (copied from the Tao of Crafting, Shopping, Rolling (RIP Great Forum Crash)):

- alvl: You can only get the alvl by calculating it, for each item that drops, is bought, gambled, re-rolled, crafted, etc. Each times an item
changes or appears by any of the above, the alvl must be calculated again. The formula is below:

if (Ilvl> 99) then {Ilvl=99}
if (Qlvl> ilvl) then {Ilvl=Qlvl} ;
if (magic_lvl> 0) then {Alvl=ilvl+magic_lvl}
else
{
if (Ilvl <(99-qlvl/2))
then {Alvl=Ilvl-Qlvl/2}
else {Alvl=2*ilvl-99}
}
If (Alvl> 99) then {Alvl=99}

(edit: Just to clarify: each affix has a minimum alvl, for example +2 class skills on amulets has min. alvl 90. The alvl of the item determines what affixes can spawn. Amulets have qlvl 1, or something ridiculously low, so the ilvl is all that matters. Also note Diadems can always get any affixes regardless of ilvl.)

I've edited in 'popular' mlvls above, as well.

Um, I think I'll just save it and figure it out later then, math is not exactly my forte. :lol:

don't worry nsx, looking at that equation made me passout

i'm back now though and trying to keep the screen scrolled down far enough i don't see it

maybe next time you should specify its a yes or no question =-P

Hmm, now that I've looked at it again, it's quite simple actually, guess reading about cancer cell metastasis for hours kinda made my head full of goo. :teeth:

The alvl formula is a little complex but it is indeed slightly simpler than cancer cell metastasis.

The only thing I will add to Shade's excellent answers is that Hell Nihlathak is actually only mlvl 95. He is indeed a boss Nihlathak, but regular Nihlathaks would be mlvl 92, and the +3 bonus makes that 95. Don't give it to him twice :) Nihlly was 98 in 1.09 though (wierdly, higher than Baal).

I might also add this link (which lives in Doc Tenshi's signature) which is a handy list of all item TCs and set/unique qlvls in 1.10.

He's 95 now, as Thrugg pointed out... his monster type is level 92, but he's a boss (+3). If he wasn't a boss he'd be 92.

And the 98 does come from 1.09 because I'm easily confused... :) Still, he's higher level than the Lord of Terror, so he must be pretty good... right?

If you say so... ;)
I didn't know he had his own monster type...

so how come some unique/set items have a qlvl lower than their base item type's? what's the point of that? take IKSC for example. Sacred Armor is in TC87 with a qlvl of 85, but IKSC has a qlvl of 37. does that mean it can spawn from something lower than an 85 level area?

I believe the qlvl is set level that you can start getting any items from it. That is why it is so hard to get Sander's Cap. It is a tc3 item that cannot even drop until late in normal (I believe lvl 20 monsters) when tc3 items are very rare. :)

To answer your question about the qlvl of 37 for the Soul cage. It cannot drop unless the monster can drop a tc 87 items even though their level could probably be 37.

Set items from any given set all have to have the same qlvl, so if you want one to be able to drop early, they all have to. Since most sets have at least one low-level member, they all have fairly low qlvls. It doesn't matter much, just means they are gated by TC rather than qlvl (unlike many uniques).

Devon, when the gambling screen is filled, each item is generated using the normal rules (before you even look at it). If one rolls up unique, the usual check is done that ilvl >= qlvl, or it will fail and be a triple durability rare. This does mean you can't gamble some uniques until you reach a certain level. The ilvl of each item is random based on your char level (clvl -5 to +4). Suppose you wanted to gamble a Gull (qlvl 6), you would need to be level 11 to be sure any Dagger could be a Gull, but level 2 would be enough for there to be an outside chance.

There, that ought to do it. :D
Ill probably consult Shade's and Thrugg's deep words of wisdom next time I am about to look for something specific, or try to craft something nice. :scratch:

Good effort! :thumbsup:

So the items in gamble screen is already generated before you buy it?

If only ID scroll works in gamble screen....
