ilvl, mlvl?

How do people (crafters, rollers) know what item lvl a certain item is and where too look to find out a monster's lvl ....plus the the area lvl?

There is a reposted list of area levels here.

Monster levels are calculated differently for regulars, champs and uniques.

Regular mLvl = area_Level
Champion mLvl = area_Level + 2
Unique mLvl = area_Level + 3

When a monster drops an item, iLvl = mLvl. AFAIK, when you buy an item from a store iLvl = cLvl + 5. There are caps to store bough iLvls in normal, not in nightmare or hell. As for rollers - different cube recipies will yield different iLvl changes. For example, the 3 perf gems + magic item recipie does not change the iLvl from the original iLvl of the item.

But why do people say charms are better from Bhaal than a TC85 area? (for transforming in the cube)
Because baal has a higher mLvl than a TC87 or level 85 area monster would. Remember he is an act boss, so his mLvl is assigned, not affected by area level. IIRC he is mLvl 99, when the highest mLvl monster in a level85 area is level **. This is AFAIK, so if anyone could confirm, that would be great.

Yep, Hell Baal is mlvl 99. Other noteworthy creatures are Hell Nihlathak (mlvl 95) and Hell Diablo (mlvl 94).
