Are we looking solely at their attributes, or do we factor rarity and required level into the mix? If it's the former, I'm going with

El
Gul
Ith
Sol
Tir

If it's the latter, then everything toward the top end is ridiculously underpowered for its rarity.

I sort of like els... +15 defence is nice early on...

elds are the ones I can't stand, together with tirs

I like Eld runes. My standard equpipment for a young act 2 merc is a 3-socketed Spetum with a chipped Sapphire and two Eld runes. Many enemies in act 2 are undead. At merc level 19-20, I switch out this weapon for a Savage Poleaxe/Halberd (made with the Cube).

I also like that they boost blocking in shields. If you aren´t deperate for resists or use a runeworded shield, that´s a viable option even for the end-game.

Absolutely. If you can one-hit kill monsters with a skill (Tiger Strike, Bash, Berserk) that costs the same or less what you get from the kills, it might be useful. But I agree that it´s one of the least useful ones.

EDIT: pwned by sam, who had an even better point.

Dol and Lem get my vote. Gold find isn't even a consideration for the vast majority of people, and Monster Flee & Replenish life are 2 more mods that I've personally never looked for.

I´ve looked for Monster Flee on throwing knives, but then I want 100%, not 25%.
 
I actually like having replenish life wioth my casters, even if its only a small amount. I had one necro with over 30 replenish life on, so he gained his life back pretty quick if he wasnt being attacked.
As for worthless runes, i'd go for Els, tirs, lems, sur/jah's (in shields or armor) and the collection of runes that give +5% to max 1 res. Unless you have 3 or 4 of 1 kind, you probably wont notice that 5%.

I vote for most of them. All but a few can be bettered by a blue jewel with a second mod, or even better a rare.

(*) These are all bested by PGems of the appropriate type. I would include Io, but it may be of some use to Barbarians (only) - other classes get more life out of PRubies, and don't need to worry about Stamina that badly anyhow (stamina potions).

for low level hammerdins bonemancers an armor and hel socketed with tirs can safe him from getting drunk on mana pots... i use it pretty often actually

But with BO, you are still better off with ruby. :D

Ah, but Lum, Ko, and Fal give you the stat bonus no matter what they're placed in. You could have a Necro or Sorc with a wand or orb that has an empty socket. If you don't have anything better to fill it with, you can always get 10 to a stat of your choice!

Good question!

Dol can be handy for a char with no crowd control skills. I've had at least two characters who benefitted greatly from that property, or rather, having a middling percent of flee on their mercs' weapons.

Eld can be good, although that partly depends on what version you play. The 1.07 Gris shield has no +blocking percent. My gris pally has three elds in his.

Lem and Gul get my vote for max uselessness. It's very difficult to imagine ever using them on their own. Pul also seems pretty worthless but I guess someone might pass up other socketing goodness to add 30% def to their armor.
