He will have both auras, unless both auras are the same, if that's the case i guess the stronger aura will be in effect. On screen the merc aura will alternate between the 2 different auras -_- Hope this helps.

As long as the aura is different to the one the merc has naturally, he'll have both auras active at the same time. For display purposes, however, both auras will just pulse between each other, but both will be active. So, if you have an act2 Holy Freeze merc, and you equip him with the Insight runeword, he'll have both the Holy Freeze aura and the Meditation aura active at the same time.

If, however, the runeword's aura is the same aura as what the merc already has naturally, I believe it'll just pulse between them both. So, an act 2 holy freeze merc with a "Doom" runeword, will pulse between two different holy freeze auras (and therefore two different damages). Thats my understanding for situations of two of the same auras. Don't quote me on this though.

I think the stronger of the two same auras will dominate.
It happens the same way when two hammerdins are in the same party. The higher level Concentration dominates, the other should just switch to salvation or something.

....and give him armor and helm runewords and get the Holy Fire and Holy Shock auras too!

Hmm, I've heard something similar to that too. I've always been under the impression that when two hammerdins were in the same party (with the same aura), the main reason why one would switch to salvation was because the two auras bonus's to the party would pulse between each other (and therefore not remaining a constant damage bonus).

I did a quick look around, and I found two different stories

http://www.diabloii.net/faq/forum-goers-pg4.shtml says
Multiple paladins cannot cast the same aura on their party. If they attempt to do so, the higher slvl of the two auras will take effect.
Yet, http://www.diabloii.net/characters/paladin/index.shtml says
If 2 Paladins have the same aura, it doesn't do the higher one, it does whichever one has pulsed more recently, so it might do one for 3 seconds, the other for 3 seconds, etc

Arreat Summit only seems to mention:
Multiple Paladins cannot "stack" Auras by all activating the same Aura at the same time. If two Paladins in a party both activate Might, they will not receive any extra damage or double the damage done by themselves and other party members. Because multiple Aura cannot be stacked, it is best for Paladins in a group to communicate and decide who will use which Aura and which Auras will be best for the group
Pretty useless for us here :/

So, I don't know. You could be right about the dominant aura.

COOL!! Ok, I know what gear to give my merc now!!

One more thing though, my assassin does not seem to be getting his holy freeze aura at all. I know pre 1.10 I did with BoS on, but now I've got nothin. You know how they get stuck behind walls? (Of course you do.) Well I use these times to test this. I sit near him and near monsters. Not only do I not see an aura, I'm not chilling any monsters. But I know that when partying with a friend last night, I got his merc's thorns and his pally's auras. What's up with this? I don't mind all that much, since I do have cold damage if I hit them they slow. And his aura keeps him safer as well, it's just annoying.

The Holy Freeze aura is only supposed to be around the feet of the character is is responsible for creating it (in this case, the act 2 merc). It's not supposed to appear on you. This is because the aura itself targets the enemy (similar to conviction, and holy fire/shock). The merc is the only one that can gain the extra cold damage gained from this aura.
