There exists an alternate reality of Sanctuary where the Great Evils (Act Bosses) not only command the demons to do their bidding but they are also powerful enough to spread their influence and corruption to even the mightiest of heroes. The Great Evils combined their power to influence & deceive all heroes of Sanctuary into abiding by a multitude of Dilemmas in which they would have to make a choice for virtually every aspect of their existence. They knew that doing this could be quite debilitating for the heroes that might challenge them, and were amazed that any even tried. Over the years, these imposed Dilemmas became known as having to choose between the “Lesser of Two Evils”. ***See my replies below for my revised & simplified versions. Primary Dilemmas – These strike at the heart of every hero and are generally the most enforced by the Great Evils. Leveling Up – Each time you level up, you must choose to assign EITHER the skill point OR the 5 attribute points. However, vanquishing the Great Evils will gradually enable you to resist their influence over this Dilemma. Each time one of them is defeated you gain an additional 10% chance to overcome their influence. Anything over 100% will then be a chance to actually recover a level's worth of points that were previously disallowed. Note: This can be done by generating a random number between 1 and 100 from random.org (or your favorite RNG). As long as it is not greater than your built-up “resistance”, you will be able to overcome this Dilemma and use both sets of points for that level (or regain previous ones). Items / Magic Find – You may only use items found in this reality of Sanctuary and must choose between using equipment under the following circumstances for both you and your Merc. EITHER all equipped magical items (i.e. not white/gray text with unfilled sockets) must include magic find OR any single item with magic find on it is not allowed to be equipped. Mercenaries – You must choose to be able to EITHER resurrect/change your merc at any time, but it must be weaponless (& not from Act3), OR hire any merc & use any weapon that is allowed, but you can only resurrect/change them upon defeating a Great Evil. Note: You may return to any act or difficulty to hire mercs. Respecs – You must choose to EITHER be able to respec at any time using at most 3/4 of each set of acquired points OR never respec your character, but all allowed Quest Rewards will be exempt from the Magic Find Dilemma. Secondary Dilemmas – These are slightly less guarded Dilemmas that may be overcome with persistence. Defeating all 5 Great Evils will reduce their influence enough that you may eliminate a Secondary Dilemma of your choice, as well as after each Great Evil you vanquish from then on. Adventuring – This will be the usual no rerunning of areas, single pass. The Dilemma is that you must choose EITHER to have access to all areas, but containers (chests, beds, piles, evil urns, etc.) are not allowed to be opened unless as part of a quest OR that clicking containers is allowed, but caves/additional zones that are not associated with a quest are off limits*. Stash Space – You may use ATMA or GoMule as an extended stash. However, the Dilemma is whether to have access to the standard stash or not. You must choose that EITHER items from the standard stash may be equipped/used at any time, but transferring back into your character from the extended stash is only allowed after defeating all 5 Great Evils (once for each difficulty) OR items placed in both the standard & extended stashes may only be transferred out again after any Great Evil has been vanquished. Note: Transferring back in from the stash(es) is only enabled until you leave the safety of the next act's “town”. Players Setting – You may change the /players setting at will, but you must choose to only use EITHER 1 thru 6 OR 7 & 8. Quest Rewards – You may not return to previous acts to collect unclaimed quest rewards, and your Dilemma is having to choose between using EITHER stat based rewards (skills, attributes, Potion of Life, Scroll of Resistance) OR item based rewards (free items, imbue, socket, personalize). Gold Spending – You must choose to allow EITHER gambling OR shopping. Horadric Cube – You must choose to use the cube for EITHER upgrading (runes, gems, rejuv-to-full, exceptional/elite) OR creating/modifying (crafting, sockets, rings/amulets, etc.). Neutral recipes are always allowed (Cow Portal, repair/recharge, & removing items in sockets). Note: Any item may be used as an ingredient in allowed recipes regardless of other restrictions. Charges / Chance to Cast – You must choose to allow the use of EITHER off-class skill charges from items (which may be equipped in either case) OR items that give a chance to cast a skill. Socket Fillers – You must choose to allow filling sockets with EITHER runes OR gems & jewels. Ethereal/Repairs – You must choose EITHER to allow the use of ethereal items, but repairing others is limited to only after defeating a Great Evil (or using the cube recipe), OR that repairing is allowed anytime, but then ethereal items are not allowed to be used. Potions – You must choose to only use EITHER red, blue, yellow, & orange potions OR purple, green, black, & white potions. Charms – You must choose to allow EITHER small OR grand charms. (Large 2-space charms are neutral & allowed.) Shrines – You must choose to allow the use of EITHER offensive OR defensive shrines. Neutral shrines (Experience, Stamina, Portal, Monster, and Gem) are always allowed. Skill Shrines, Refilling Shrines & Wells are not allowed since they are both offensive & defensive. * Caves/additional zones not associated with quests are... Act 1 (Caves, Crypt, Mausoleum, The Hole, The Pit, & The Cow Level), Act 2 (The Stony Tomb & Ancient Tunnels), Act 3 (Arachnid Lair & Swampy Pit), Act 4 (none), Act 5 (Abaddon, Pit of Acheron, Drifter Cavern, Infernal Pit, & Icy Cellar). As if the above Dilemmas were not enough, you still have choices on how to enter the tournament. You can create 2 characters as partners that share a stash, but EITHER all of their Dilemmas must be opposites, OR they may never eliminate any Secondary Dilemma that the other one has already overcome. Note: The Leveling Up Dilemma is not tied to the partnership. You can go it alone, but then you get to choose EITHER to start out with 10% “resistance” for the Leveling Up Dilemma OR to designate a single equipment slot that is exempt from the Magic Find Dilemma. I really don't know how far anyone would make it in this version of Sanctuary with this many restrictions, but I thought it would be interesting to see how everyone contends with having to choose the “Lesser of Two Evils” for basically everything. So, does anyone have any interest in trying this? Should I clarify or change anything?
