    I'd like to Mp, but...

...I have no idea how to! And with that I don't mean the technical side, I can sort that out (I hope).
I just have never done it before. All I ever played was single player. So, how do you behave and what are the do and don'ts?
How do I go ahead to try it out without annoying everybody? I'm easily scared and overwelmed. :(
Anybody willing to give me a gentle introduction to the world of MPing? :)

Well, just behave politely and bring what you have to the table. If you're an Enchantress, enchant everyone up. If you're a Conc barb, get down in the trenches and tank. Help your teammates by killing monsters that they can't, try not to stir up too many monsters at once...just apply basic common sense to the situation. Pretty much how you would play in SP, just be conscious of what your teammates are up to and try and complement that.

In general the host is going to decide how drops work but mostly it's whoever needs it most, gets it.

Depends on who your playing with... Generally the host can make rules and such... Another factor is play style and what the MP sesion is about.

If you like to do full clears, I'd find likeminded people. I play SPL so I don't MP here sadly :'( .

So post your intentions on what you want from a MP game. I'm sure you can find someone who could play well with you.

Just keep in mind that it is a group effort, So don't be stingy with the drops and try to complement each others skills. If your a paladin and plaing with a CE using necro... Don't run redemption offten........

Hmmmm...I don't really know what I want to do. I just think it's a nice idea to have a friendly game with somebody else, helping each other out and achieving your goal. Socialising a bit here and there (yes, I am female :) ). Or maybe do some Baal runs which I can't really do on my own. I don't know, just think it would be nice to interact with others. :)

there is never an easy way to do something for the first time. and a full mp game with folk who already know each other and play like experts can be overwhelming. my advice though, is to jump in. so far, all the folk i have mp'd with here have been gracious and friendly.
to give you an idea of what happens. earlier today i was in a baal run game playing my wolfbarb. a grand charm dropped at my feet and i picked it up along with an id scroll. it was a nice paladin skiller. there were 2 paladins in the game so i told the group what had dropped and asked if anyone wanted it. someone did so i dropped it. the next game i was given a +1 warcries grand charm.
join in. have fun. help when you can.

Hee hee now your getting some where... There are really 3 game "types" that are played. Questing, MF/EXP, and PvP.

Anyways if you play SPL I'd be more than happy to MP with you.

One thing about MP is to know who your playing with... What mods you use (if any) and what mods they use (if any).

If your not familiar with SPL, it's what some may call "purist" d2. Version 1.10 only items, found by other SPL chars only (ie: fresh start to join, trading with anyone thats not SPL taints your character and they no longer are SPL) Obvioulsy no mods at all.

In the end I hope you find what your looking for, in play mates :p

I'm currently working on the SPF Multiplayer Guide, the thread for it is here:

    http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=356287

The first draft of the guide is very good, it's just a little long. Unfortunately, it is taking my longer to get the next draft out than I had hoped, but I am working on it. Obviously, the game host will determine the game type, pace, and other rules, but the guide is good for giving you an idea of some of the things long time MPers have taken for granted.

open portals in packs of gloams, FE fana moonlords, and say they are safe :D
    go hostile at inoppurtune moments
don't give anyone in the party battle orders
run ahead and wake the monsters up, kill nothing.

but seriously, just join and play normally, and stick with the group unless you can handle p8 hell

I think that the best thing to do is pretty much what you did with this post, tell the host and other people in game that this is your first or second time at joining a mp game.

Then, most people will understand that you "are not an expert" and cut you some slack.

Ive had a couple of people who are new to mp game play join my games, and I find that they get along fine because they try to fit in and learn and that really, is what it is all about. trying to get along with everybody else.
Also, when somebody says something that you dont understand, you can ask them what the heck they mean and they will tell you.

Ive always found that people who join my games, or in games that I join are very willing to talk and help others out in a mp game so really imho, the best way to find out is to join a game and have fun!

I don't MP much too, I have found that MPing is little bit hectic, it's a fast going all the time, so be prepared for that. But people here are very nice, you will have no problem. All you have to do when they invite you to the party is hitting "P" key and accept the invitation. If they are already in action, someone will make you a town portal that will bring you to the rest of the party. Enjoy your MP games.

Thank you all for the input. It sounds like I should just give it a try tonight. Many thanks for the link to the MP Guidelines. It answered a lot of the things I was wondering about. There are just two more questions I have.
Do I bring my merc to a mp game? If so, what weapon should he have (do I need to change his reaper's toll)?
If I go to a Baal run, do I equip for killing or for Mfing?

    Thanks a lot!

1 Yes bring your merc this is what most people do.
1B Why would you need to change his weapon? the reapers toll is a great merc weapon and due to that fact many use them on their mercs.

2It depends some go for killing gear some go for mass mf or something in betwwen. Be aware though that its common to let the char that has the most MF equipped to get the killing blow on baal.

indeed, do bring a merc, but if there's a necro in the party, maybe you should take away the reapers, if he depends on specific curses, or has one that benefits the party more than decrepify

In the Baal runs I've been in, monsters were steamrolled quite quickly due to the fact that everyone in there was either high 80's or low 90's, so it probably wouldn't hurt to pack some MF on.

If you want a slower paced game I would look at playing in questing games, if you want chatty games try a duel game (but expect to lose if your not use to dueling). usually duel games get 4-8 people but only 2 go at it at a time.

If your looking for fast paced action go to baal run games.

I only play questing in MP and usually play with my more exotic builds like the magi_barb I have been playing lately. I find that there has always been a fair amount of talk and strategy in the questing games that I involve myself in.
