I need some help, this is weird...

I suppose this might not be totally off-topic of Diablo2 but i went to play like usual today and the computer does not recognize my disc all the sudden? I pull it out and look at it, hundreds of tiny little scratches on it like someone took there fingernails to it. Problem is ever since i bought the cd it has not left the cd-rom so how could it have got all these scratches? How can i fix it? How can i get it to recognize my disc again so i don't have to buy a new one? All the help and suggestions given are widely appreciated.

There are disk repair kits out there to smooth out the marks. But it sounds more like you need a new cd rom drive, or a cleaning.

Some of the discs I use look like sand paper after my kids have had their way with them, yet they still work after I have seen the same error code.

Clean you cd rom drive first, then consider replacing it.

And as 5ws said, this is the wrong forum for D2 issues, but not the wrong forum for computer errors.

in another words, edit your thread and change "diablo expansion disc" to "my porn collection cd" and you should be fine.

sounds like from a hardware perspective that your cdrom drive is already conking out. back in the height of my diablo addiction my diablo 2 cd never left the drive in almost two years. when i finally quit and took the cd out to sell it, it was still in "near perfect" condition, hardly any scratches. that was two years of spinning constantly (I played about 10-12 hours/day) for almost two years.

use another cd you don't mind losing. if the same thing happens replace your cd-rom. hopefully it's still under warranty.

if your d2 CD is FUBARd, I doubt you can get a replacement. You'll most likely need to buy a new one. Before you do that though try it out on another computer just to make sure it's really the d2 CD that's toast and not your CD ROM drive.

no one is looking for a fight here, I have had the same error, even when some disks work, and others don't. Then most common cause is a dirty cd Drive.

this belongs more in this forum than a D2 related forum because it has more to do with his/her computer than with the game, just because someone mentions D2 doesn't mean it automatically has to get thrown into that forum

Correct. This is a general gaming question or a hardware question. It's not a D2 question.

If you own a copy of the game it's legal for you to download another copy of it, right? Download the disc you need in ISO format, or some other image format, and burn your own CD using just about any burning software out there. That should be the simplest solution unless your drive is really dying.

Well, before you go out and replace the actual drive, try installing or playing a different game with it - or just try playing a music cd and see if it will load up okay. If that causes problems, then it's probably the drive - otherwise it really is just the cd.

Hopefully, you just need a replacement cd - D2 is pretty cheap these days. :)

One quickie question - does the cd drive even start spinning when you try to start the game?

Your comment was rude - plus it was in error, that's why.

Rude? If you can't tell that it's a joke, then I really don't know what to say. And in OTF??? A forum where anything goes? Where we have discussions about having sex with robots? Maybe I should just pack my bags...

you can usually tell when you put it in and/or start up the program, your CD drive will make some sort of sound.

and if you do end up buying a new CD, dont keep it in the drive the entire time - thats not a good thing to do. as you can wear it out more quickly.

anyways, as the other ppl said - try cleaniing the CD first, and then if it doesnt work, you'll have to get a new drive or CD.
because the problem could be the CD with the little scratches, or it could be that you burned out the drive - to test that, put in a different CD.

Just like Mecal said ... when you first start the game, your drive will start spinning the disc - it will make a fairly audible "whirling/whoosing" sort of sound. If it doesn't do that, the drive isn't reading the disc - so either the disc is completely mangled or there is something wrong with the drive.
If you then try to play another game or run an audio cd, you should be able to figure out which problem it is.

I sit in this forum everyday so I understood your joke - however, the person you directed the comment towards apparantly isn't a regular here and so he didn't get it and instead took it as trolling - look at things from his point of view.

Anyway, you made a little mistake - anybody could have done it. I've made my share. So just relaaaaaaaaax, and think a bit before you click 'submit reply'. No need to go packing your bags on my account, I certainly don't have any power here. ;)

if you check, you may see that they've already been packed
if you have a look in your pocket you might come across a train ticket
