Wait, what? Instead of finding a payphone, you found an internet cafe or something?

... Ask the people at the desk to borrow the phone.

Im at a computer lab at school. Theres only one other person in here and his phone is dead. Looks like I'll just play the waiting game till someone else comes in.

I think it would be faster to leave the lab and find someone. I'm sure there's a phone no more than 100 feet away.

Find a phone and call home.

Have a spare key Fed Exed to you.

While you wait for the spare, find some cute girl in class and ask if you can stay at her place for the night.

Wire hangers make excellent field expedient slim jims. I even practice doing that to make sure that the next time I have to, it's not going to take long enough for somebody to call the cops.

Seems like using a hanger would be tricky, especially for someone who has never done it before and doesn't know what to feel around for. And where the hell is he supposed to get a wire hanger at a school? And where they hell are you supposed to get a wire hanger anytime you lock your keys in the car?

I keep my spare key in my wallet.

The first time I used a hanger it took about 30 minutes to finally open the door. Now I'm down to about 30 seconds.

Where do you get a hanger? You mean you don't keep one in your bumper? Just in case.

Spare key? Where's your sense of adventure?

I am in the habit of locking my car with my remote thingy which is a part of my car key. That way I never have to worry about locking myself out.

This post isn't much help right now though, is it?

Wire hangers usually work depending on the make/model. I have seen it done a few times.

Do you have electronic locks?

Call AAA? If you aren't a member, I think they'll charge you. But it beats spending the night somewhere. Unless you find said cute girl. :wink3:

I did walk around and found the payphone sign. It pointed over into this corner, so I proceed to the corner to find only a wire sticking out of the wall.

Whats a slim jim? Aside from the snack.

AJ, If I could have called AAA I would have called home.

Yes Amra, I do have electronic locks.

Someone finally did come in and let me use their phone. So now Im back home. Sucks though, cuz I had to bring my friend home today too and I made him late.

Anyway, I guess the moral of the story is to take the keys out of the ignition prior to closing the door.

A slim jim is a slim flat piece of metal, with a hook shaped end on it, used to unlock your car by sticking it between the window and the gasket, and attempting to latch onto the lock mechanism inside the door.

Oh, the window was closed and I have power windows so I dont think you could open it.

But does home recognize the "flat signal"?
Huh? What do you mean, flat signal?

I don't have a car, but I'm always paranoid about keys and check them every time I leave the house. I make a ritual out of it so I never forget.

If only you knew how to steal a car. :)

It takes 5 sec's.
I once saw a documentary on car theft in England. There was one bit where they filled a parking lot with cars that all had all sorts of different theft prevention mechanisms. They challenged these professionals (professional what I don't recall) to steal them all in under three minutes each and drive them to the opposite side of the car park. Most of them they got into and moved in a matter of seconds. In the end there was only one they couldn't get into at all, and one they got into but couldn't get moving inside the time frame.

It was hilarious, while they were stealing the cars they interviewed some of the owners and asked them about the security on their cars. This one guy was standing with his car behind him talking to the camera; he said something like "oh, the dealer told me there's this immobiliser, and fancy locks and blah blah blah... so I don't think they'll get into it, no" - and while he's talking the guys move in on his car and in those few seconds get past the door and just as he says "...no" the engine roars into life. The look on that guy's face was pure gold.
