I noticed some things as to why I can spend hours playing a game that I've already done everything in, and why I can't enjoy D3 at all:

*This isn't a D3 bash, as I don't think that game is awful. I just wish some of these things could be incorporated into D3.

1) I can actually see my character, AND I know what my character is doing at all times. I know the whole particle effect thing has been talked about a lot, but if you go back and play D2 you'll notice a huge difference.

2) I don't feel claustrophobic playing D2. I don't know if it's zoomed out more, or if the scale of monsters is smaller, but I don't feel crammed. When you combine this with point #1, it's a big deal for me.

3) The game plays a lot faster. Your character naturally runs a lot faster. Think about starting a new barbarian in D3, and think about how slowly he trots around. Then go create a barbarian in D2 and you'll be amazed. I guess all of the hours of D2 set the standard for pace, and I just can't get use to the D3 pace.

4) I like the synergies between talents/talent trees more than I do the D3 skill system.

5) Yes, items (especially rune words) are way overpowered in D2, but the items are actually interesting. I was excited to try and build new 1.10 rune words that no one even makes anymore just to see if I could make a cool niche build. I've never been anxious to do something like that in D3.

6) Loot. When I'm playing solo through hell in D2, I know that in the later acts there's always a chance a Windforce could drop. Or a Zod. Or whatever. I've had a Jah drop for me with no MF, off of a regular mob in A5. I've never seen something of that rarity in D3.

I really hope some of these things get taken into consideration for RoS.
