i have questions about ladder character and open realm, also want to know how to mule

i'm new to internet characters, i used to play only single player games.

1.so do ladder characters dissappear after the season ends? if so how long?

2.what's the difference between ladder and open realm characters? what is an open realm character, do their characters never disappear?

3.can someone give me a crashcourse on muling? is there a difference between open realm and ladder character muling? do you always have to hide your stuff? does ATMA work for muling on the internet?

1) The closed realms are divided into Ladder and Nonladder characters. At the end of each ladder season, all ladder characters (with all of their equipment) are transferred to Nonladder. They are not deleted. Blizzard does not say how long each ladder season will last, but I believe the first 2 seasons were about 8 months and 12 months long. Season 3 started in August.

2) I think you're confusing some terms here. Open realm characters are the same as single player characters. They are saved on the user's computer and are subject to massive hacking/duping. Closed realm characters are saved on battle.net servers. New characters will disappear 10 days after they are last played. Once you have played a character for 2 hours total, they will be considered permanent. At this point, as long as they are logged into once every 90 days, they will be saved on the battle.net servers.

3) Atma does not work online. There are 3 main ways to mule on b.net:
(a) Public games. BENEFITS: the game probably won't disappear. DRAWBACKS: the game can fill up or other people can find your items.
(b) Private games with online friends. BENEFITS: game will stay open. DRAWBACKS: if the online friends aren't trustworthy, you'll lose your items.
(c) Private games solo. If you create a game and stay in it for 5+ minutes, the game will not be deleted immediately when you leave. You can drop your items in your private game, log out, log in with a different character, reenter the game, and pick up your items. BENEFITS: You don't have to worry about anyone stealing your items or for a friend to come online. DRAWBACKS: If your ISP goes down or the battle.net server crashes or you log in/out to fast and get temporarily restricted, you'll lose your items.

Welcome to online play. I suggest building trust with people you meet online slowly. Temptation to cheat people can be great. Many of the forum members here can be trusted, but there are always bad apples anywhere, so it'd be worthwhile to check into some people's post histories before trusting them too much. If you play USEast, I hope to see you out there!

2) yes, ur nl char can only play nl games, u'll have to create a new ladder char if u want to play ladder once a season ends.

I use trusted people from the marketplace when transferring (The reputation system lets you really know who's trustworthy). If noone's on though (like most of the time) I use private games.vIn 5 years online, I think I have twice been unable to get back into a private passworded game, but your mileage may vary.
