I feel stupid. Unlocking Hardcore

I just reinstalled for the new ladder. I have been playing Hardcore for years but I feel stupid because I forget what I have to do to be able to make a Hardcore character on the ladder.

I need to beat Softcore once if I recall but can it be in SP or does it have to on B net?

It can be on either, mouse pad had a HC hack a long time ago and basically all it did was fake a nightmare character on your account. Easiest way is to just get someone to make an account with a hardcore char on it, access thatt account and then you can make one on whatever.

I think the easiest way is to download a singleplayer char that has done normal and put that char in your char folder. After that you can create hardcore chars in singleplayer and on Bnet. Done in a minute.

the easiest way is as follows (quoted from mouse_wiz from the HC FAQ)

"First of all you only need to log onto an account that can create HC then you can create on all of your accounts.
If you don't have any such account the easiest way is to go through the following, which I've made as idiot proof as possible due to some people having inhibitions against messing with their registry.

1) Right click on desktop and choose "create new text document"
2) Press F2 to rename the document "allowhc.reg" or something similar (make sure that you're not naming it ".reg.txt" or something silly to that extent)
3) Right click on that file and choose "edit"
4) Copy and paste the below into it, then save changes;
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Diablo II]
"AllowHardcore"=dword:00000001
5) Double click on the file, select yes you do want to add the information, and OK afterwards
6) Proceed to create HC characters at your leisure"

All good advice, thanks folks. I don't have access to any other accounts so I used the method from the faq. See you all on ladder.

I'm not sure I understand MeekZero's 4th and 5th steps here:

4) Copy and paste the below into it, then save changes;
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Diablo II]
"AllowHardcore"=dword:00000001
5) Double click on the file, select yes you do want to add the information, and OK afterwards

Do I need a program called Windows Registry Editor?? I also got no prompt to "add information"...and is this supposed to be pasted into the Diablo 2 folder?? The original author seems to have spelled out all the simple steps but left the important ones unattended...

ok, this is very simple.

1. make a new txt doc on your desktop. name it something random as in: ahsgasjhsak
2. copy and past the following into it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Diablo II]
"AllowHardcore"=dword:00000001
3. go to file ->save as -> name it 'allowhc.reg' -> and go to file type and select all files and close the document.
4. now all you need to do is click the reg. file you created and it will ask you if you want to add it to the registry. say yes, and create hardcore characters! **note - the file can be on your desktop, you do not need to have it in your d2 folder or anything. you just make the file and open it, say yes through the prompt and you're golden.

Ahhh, I think the problem was this:

"and go to file type and select all files and close the document."

I had it only set to save as text file. Thanks!!
