The ilvl of an item (ilvl = item level) is a number that's stored with the item, indicating "where it came from". It's set to the mlvl of the monster that dropped it.

Thus, an amulet dropped by a lvl 1 monster has an ilvl 1, whereas an amulet dropped by hell baal has an ilvl of 99. The same amulet dropped in hell pits has an ilvl of 85, 87 or ** (depending on who dropped it there).

Ilvls for items obtained from shopping and gambling are based on your clvl.

Cube recipes have their own rules for setting the ilvl of the resulting item.

Ilvls are used to determine what mods (for magic/rare items) can appear on the item. For example, a grand charm has to have an ilvl of 50 (or higher) to be able to get the skiller mod.
Other than for random affixes and socketing, the ilvl has no function (AFAICS). In particular, I don't think the ilvls of sets and uniques are used anywhere...

Other than using maphack, there is NO way to see the ilvl in the game. So for things where ilvl matters (cube recipies), you have to remember the ilvl of the involved items.

Of course, if the item already has a high level mod on it, you know that it's ilvl is high enough for that mod: any grand charm that already has a skiller mod on it has ilvl 50 or higher, but you don't know whether it's ilvl 50, 75 or 99.

Each unique/set item has its own quality lvl. If the roll check for an unique item is successful, but qlvl>ilvl, the game will generate failed unique - rare item with tripple durability. Because of that Pindleskin, who is monster lvl 86 can't drop Tyraels,Arachnid Mesh and Azurewrath, which have all qlvl=87.

IIRC ilvl of gambled item is ranged from chlvl -4 to chlvl +5 (or is it chlvl-5 to chlvl+4?). ilvl of bought item from is chlvl +5 unless there are some ilvl borders (in normal difficulty)

so my best bet is to try to get a ammy with ilvl 99 ( from baal ) , to craft a amy that might turn out very nice?

That's the best choice. But if you have a high level character, IIRC on chlvl 92 all gambled amulets have high enough ilvl to get +2skills (the highest prefix wanted) when crafted with that character.

Ilvl is used for calculating Alvl, the maximum amount of sockets, staffmods, Slvl/chance of some CtC skills on uniques, Slvl/charges of non-unique items with charges.

Gambling Ilvl is Clvl -5 to +4.

From Clvl 93 and higher all gambled amulets would have a chance at getting +2 skills when crafting.

This statement is just plain wrong. What on earth does a maphack (or the map at all) have to do with ilvl of items? Sure, there is no way in the game to see the number but that doesn't mean you need "maphack" for it. There are actually many other programs that show it (including such maphack of course), including for example a program promoted by this very site, ATMA, that has the ability to show the ilvl. Appearantly there are thus, ok way (according to this site) to find and show it, just as there are bad ways.

i think all he meant was that maphack is the only way to see ilvl on the realms. this isnt technically true, but its by far the most common way.

I have a couple questions that would fit in this thread I think:

1) I played alot in 1.09, but not at all since then until very recently, and have forgotten much of what I once knew. I thought you needed ilvl 90 grand charms to get +skills mod, I know I used to run around hell cows looking for the things all the time. Did the ilvl requirement for that mod change?

2) What ilvl vambraces would I need to craft those knockback gloves with a chance to get a +skilltree mod?

3) Does the ilvl matter at all for imbue, or is that just clvl?

1.10 is very different from 1.09

1) it's 50 now
2) for crafting ilvl=clvl/2 + ilvl/2. If you buy the gloves from vendors (they have ilvl=clvl+5) with a clvl 68 character, you have a chance to get +2 bow/javelin/passive/martial skills. If you have high ilvl gloves from somewhere else, you need to have clvl/2 + ilvl/2 >=70
3) It is just clvl. ilvl=clvl + 4

2) Note that different gloves require different ilvl's. They need a alvl of at least 40 to get the +2 skill tree mod. alvl is determined by some complicated formula of ilvl and qlvl.
3) Note that again it's alvl that determines what mods can appear. For Jewelry, ilvl = alvl, but that is not the case for other items. Diadems of any ilvl can get any affix.

i think this is what you are looking for...

If (ilvl>99) then {ilvl=99}
if (qlvl>ilvl) then {ilvl=qlvl}
if (magic_lvl>0) then {alvl=ilvl+magic_lvl}
else
{
if (ilvl<(99-qlvl/2))
then {alvl=ilvl-qlvl/2}
else {alvl=2*ilvl-99}
}
If (alvl>99) then {alvl=99}

you can shorten (thx rtb) the above formula for determining alvl for gloves to:

Chain Gloves
Ilvl 12 - 93: Alvl = Ilvl - 6
Ilvl 94 - 99: Alvl = 2*Ilvl - 99

Heavy Bracers
Ilvl 43 - 78: Alvl = Ilvl - 21
Ilvl 79 - 99: Alvl = 2 * Ilvl - 99

Vambraces
Ilvl 69 - 99: Alvl = 2 * Ilvl - 99

Heavy Gloves
Ilvl 7 - 96: Alvl = Ilvl - 3
Ilvl 97 - 99: Alvl = 2 * Ilvl - 99

Sharkskin Gloves
Ilvl 39 - 80: Alvl = Ilvl - 19
Ilvl 81 - 99: Alvl = 2 * Ilvl - 99

Vampirebone Gloves
Ilvl 63 - 68: Alvl = Ilvl - 31
Ilvl 69 - 99: Alvl = 2 * Ilvl - 99

you can find other goodies like thie above in the glove crafting guide stickied in the zon forum

I want to do my first crafting

I have several questions that fit in this thread as well.

1) my pal lvl 85, used the 3 rings cubed to get an ammu which got +80 life.Useless
Please confirm my calculation:
the ammu ilvl is 0.75 x clvl = 63 right?
To craft this ammu and get 4 affixes the resulting ilvl has to be >71.

So 71 = 63/2 + clvl/2
clvl shall be (71-31)*2=80 ? which I can achieve with my assassin clvl 80.
Now what shall I do to to increase my chances of getting mods like +2 shadow skills which are alvl 40, I guess ? as I don't know the quality of the ammu ? and I don't want to get poison charges as well.

2) I see people crafting gloves knowing that vamp gloves are qlvl 63.
Is there a table I can refer to to find the qlvl of items ? or some hints to deduct the qlvl ? then they use the alvl= ilvl -(qlvl/2) for what ?

3) I got a flail 3 sockets and wanted to use a socket quest act 5 to get a flail 4 socket worth a good rune in trade to make Hoto. It did not accept to add a socket. Why ? Is it related to qlvl or ilvl somehow?

4) a comment to ZZimer : I guess that crafting something with high ilvl (99)and high clvl will give you a very high rlvl (requirement to wear it) something like you need to be lvl 105 ? I read that in one thread, sorry.

You can find all the qlvl's at d2data.net (Base Item Index).
The formula's superdave listed for alvl tell you what affixes you can get. alvl is the maximum affix lvl. A list of those for each item type can also be found at d2data.net

Already socketed items cannot be socketed. The socket quest will add the max sockets possible for the specific base item at it's specific ilvl.
-Uniques, Sets, and Rares get 1 socket.
-Magic items get 1 or 2 sockets. (50% chance of each)
-White items get the max based on their ilvl. This list is almost completely correct.

No. ilvl does not effect required_lvl. required_lvl is set by the highest required_lvl of all the affixes, base item type, and any runes/jewels/gems in the item. For crafting, the required_lvl is increased by some formula dealing with number of affixes. At high levels, it's +22. That's why all the crafted +2 amulets are req lvl 89 (instead of 67).
