I bought Guild Wars. All hope is lost.

I now have a character on the Prophecy campaign, named Son of Sylvan. I'll be playing him whenever my roommate isn't playing GW also. I've also realized the Prophecy is much more monotonous and has a much slower to start than Nightfall.
Yep, Factions is the fastest starting of the three though. You can reach level 20 easily within the first few hours. At first I hate Factions, but after pillaging through most of it recently the story has caught my attention and is easily my second favorite to play, next to Nightfall. If you want, I should be on for a bit tonight while you are, add me to your friends list: Niortimus Dryskol. I will probably be on another character, but your friends list will show you my other name.

I'm in the camp of those that think it's fun for the first few hours then gets immensley tedious, repetetive and excessively boring. The original was released way before it was finished. There's not even any equipment worth working for.

WoW was fun.. until you hit the end game and the game becomes "raid instance 40000 times to get good gear or no advancement." I like lord of the rings online, they plan to release armor sets/advancement opportunities to every type of playstyle including soloists. Not to mention I'm much more of a pvper (and although lord of the rings doesn't have much pvp I find the pve more entertaining. Can't wait for age of conan/warhammer/pirates of the burning sea). The pvp on WoW is terrible and horribly unbalanced. Not much skill involved either.

Pirates of the Burning sea seems like it's going to revolutionize how mmorpgs are done. A level 1 can effectively destroy a level 50 for example. The levels only determining the ammount of skills and what kind of boats you can captain. The bigger boats will move slower so a "lower level" in a quicker boat with further range can even defeat boats much bigger. The swordplay in the game is designed to be very realistic. No jumping around or running around like a monkey and techniques/attacks aimed to kill when they connect instantly do so make levels in pvp relatively unnecessary.

Air direction is going to play a large role in boat combat much like it did back in the day and they're aiming to make the boats behave as realisticly as possible. Then there's the fact that NOTHING will be gained from the npcs and all goods, including rum, will be made and sold by player traders. Endgame will consist of making money (via pirating, selling, or warring) and buying boats/building your empire. Really looking foreward to this game.

*Edit* Each level people will get skills/techniques and if I remember correctly just in swordplay alone each technique has about 80-160 different moves. You can only (by the highest level) have 20 techniques learned. Therefore many players will have completely different fighting styles (there's already 3 styles each with their own massive ammount of move sets) making it very unique. The strategy element in this game sounds nice. Four factions to pick from the French, Spanish and british as well as the pirate nations.

I never really understood the point of PvP in an RPG, to be honest.
Because the skill comes from using the right skills/spells at the right time instead of placing your enemy in the center of your screen, as in a FPS, right?

That's because an mmo isn't the same as a traditional/standard rpg. It's also designed to represent a realistic environment/world (outside respawning and other elements, including fantasy). Therefore the players in the world to keep people playing is that the players themselves have more potential than the npcs that make up the world. They're the people who are gifted and have the ability to shape the world/events but like in life who's to say that each of these individuals have the same goals?

In an mmo you're not taking a character with a predefined personality, name, history, and story. You're making one yourself. If someone is following you around on a quest purposely hindering you/trying to mess you up in real life would be considered they're trying to mess up your mission. In some character's eyes would that not be someone working against you? In this case why can't you kill them? A good rpg allows choices and your choices reflect upon your character. Why can't someone work with the enemies the good people are trying to stop? Why can't some people's character's relate to another side's goals/ideals? Not allowing these things only hinder roleplay.

In fact even now to date and I believe will be the same even with warhammer most of the quests/options/story is very linear. You don't really make any impact at all which is another reason I'm really liking burning seas. Things you do actually impact the world and there's honestly actual choice. I feel this is going to put the "Role playing" in "game."

I think guild wars seems more fun than wow... I played wow got to level 26 and its to time consuming and the battles got boring, I got sick of pulling one enemy at a time and watching my character wack it. Also the battles were so paced compared to guild wars and diablo 2 and the attacks werent as sweet. Like you just hacked once over and over, I was a pally, atleast in guild wars your attack animation is longer and looks cool.

Diablo 2 still rox though.. but Im hoping to get on Guild Wars eventually. When my girlfriends computer gets fixed and she gets on it.

An FPS requires a lot more skill.

I mean, it can work but you both have to be almost exactly the same level and the game has to be so heavily play-balanced it's almost impossible. When it comes right down to it, RPGs are just about numbers. It's kind of like noughts and crosses, there is skill involved but if you both know your stuff and the game is properly balanced then it just becomes pure chance.

Yeah, that's true, in true MMOs the PVP combat is quite different to the kind you find in D2 for instance.

I've just found out that a PvE party with 3 differently built necros is a lot of fun. My roommate's hero necro casts the minions since he has Vampiric Horror and Flesh Golem, and he also has to blow them up. I Nova them and hex everything imaginable (Empathy/Backfire/Necrosis). I also use Putrid Explosion, Death Swarm and Signet of Sorrow. The other necro hexes everything and also steals health from everything. So basically, each Necro only specializes in one or two skills, making us all rediculously strong. Add to that a Paragon and a whole ton of healers, and we're all pretty much unstoppable. At least, so far.

Re: I bought Guild Wars. All hope is lost.

Can't believe I missed this thread. I guess I'll play necro twice today.

IGN Stephanie Seymour (probably - I decided to make an Elementalist legendary survivor)

EDIT - oh, and if anyone still might play, don't forget to grab your free pane of storage during the anniversary promotion. They also made an extra bag / slot now for armor & weapons.
