What I really liked was what people have been *****ing about to no end. The fact that magic is scarce, and when it is found, rather mundane, in the LotRO.
I think it at least makes sense. If you have played Middle-Earth Role-Playing Game (the non-computer one, can't remember the game corp that released it), you instantly remember that at least during most of the Third Age the Eye was pretty vigilant for any emergence of exceptional power, and attuned to looking for magic (mainly to divine the lost Ring). Any insane casting of fireballs at will would summon the attention of Sauron, and the few that could do such feats often declined from doing so. And for a good reason. The lack of spellcaster classes makes absolute sense lorewise, even if the wizard fanbois cry about it.
