How's a hammerdin to start?

I was wondering how easy it is to start as a hammerdin. This isn't the first time i've played this game, i had 3 or 4 over lvl 90 a few years ago, one of which was a hammerdin. I seem to remember that hammerdin being the second to last character that i made, though.

So i'm wondering how gear dependent they are, and if i could make one and have a relatively easy time playing without instant gear. I was going to make a lightning sorc but then i read that they're very gear dependent too >.>
