Howdy

n00b to this forum. Just wanted to say hello. I'll look around more to get the mechanics here, just getting ready for a road trip and time is at a premium.

My motivation is to help someone try to get D2 working on her computer so we can play online together. We've been through all the patches, driver updates, video tests/tweaks, Googled up and down for possible fixes, etc. and she still gets a black screen and system lock up when she tries to run the game on her PC [machine is about 3-4 years old].

Can someone please maybe point me to where I need to look on this board for additional thoughts and to ask associated tech questions and I'll check in a little later?

Thanks. I'm glad to be aboard and look forward to chatting with you. Appreciate it.

Re: Howdy

Hi and welcome. Good to see new fa(e)ces.

I have to warn you that tech questions don't easily get a fast answer here, but we can try anyway.

D2 is brutally old and has a lot of compatibility problems. Now for a few starter questions: do you get a black screen straight away (i.e. not even a Blizz start up logo)? And have you tried playing in windowed mode?

Good luck in any case.

edit: also, what OS are you using?

Re: Howdy

Hmm... machine is 3-y years old so I'm betting it's not running Vista...or is it?

Is it a Mac?

Also tell us everything you can about the computer being used (specs, other programs, LAN?, Wireless, etc? What version of Diablo is being run? is it modded in any way, ec\tc?

I think she said it goes black before Blizzard splash screen - will confirm. Here are the specs, and I'll try to get the other apps she uses as time permits, although they ain't really nothing I don't use on my 2008 machine [MS Office, Skype, MSN, facebook, etc.]:

We haven't even gotten as far as playing online yet. I never played Diablo online. Plenty of MMORPGs, but not Diablo. Thanks - please let me know what else you need.

Re: Howdy

it should run fine on that system

make sure your user is an administrator
also run D2VidTst.exe and set it 'direct draw (2d)', or glide if you have the wrapper installed

Re: Howdy

And I'd still try that windowed mode.

Go to properties of your quick link and insert -w at the end of the line. It should look something like:

"C: \Games\Diablo II\Diablo.exe -w"
