How to Utilize Mind Blast and Cloak of Shadow

Ok, I am a level 41 flashdancer, this is my first diablo 2 char ever, im a noob.

Any ways the skills I use are Dragon Talon, Lightning sentry, Death Sentry, Fade, and Shadow Master. But I keep hearing how cloak of shadows and mind blast are important skills. In hell soloing diablo, which I am doing until I get a decent set of armor, I am doing fine using only the above listed skills and not even coming close to dieing. However in nightmare and hell mode I think I am going to have to start using mind blast and cloak of shadows. The problem is, I don't understand how those skills work. And how to use them. Can someone please explain? Also, where are the best places to find topaz? In hell I'm only finding saphires and diamonds. FURTHERMORE, if I equip an act 1 merc with a crossbow that has 41%MF, will that MF% work if the merc is shooting? Or does MF% only work for the actual char using it.

I use CoS frequently, but never MB. CoS is almost like casting a wide area freeze spell. All of the normal monsters, except for those right next to you, stop attacking. And those that do still attack have a reduced AR. Also, you get an effective increased AR when you attack them. This is REALLY useful when you're up against ranged attackers, as it basically shuts them down. Another nice bonus is that it prevents some spell casters - like normal council members from spamming hydras. This is a spell you want to cast if things look like they're getting too hot, or if you just want to clear out some monsters without getting hurt. Casting this will basically let you do whatever with want with near impunity. If you throw down some traps, monsters will just stand there and take the hits for as long as CoS is active. If you melee, your target will return the attack with a lower AR.

    -(most) enemies stop attacking
    -(most) spell casters stop casting
    -enemies are easier to hit
    -you are harder to hit

Also, do NOT use this on the Ancients as it will cause everyone in the game to get disconnected.

It's very normal you don't have trouble with normal diablo. Most characters don't around lvl40.

Mind Blast is cast on monsters, so you must target them with your right mouse button. You'll knock them back, put them into hit recovery, and get a chance to convert one or more of them. The converted monster's dmg is pathetic, but what you want from it is the crowd control it provides: its effect is a bit of a mix between Confuse curse, Attract curse and a summonable minion.

All gems have equal chance to drop. Try the Cow level: it's a generally good area to farm gems.

When your merc makes a killing blow, your MF and your merc's MF are added together. If you make a killing blow, only your MF is counted.

Aside from not being able to use crossbows on A1 mercs... if the merc makes the kill, MF = your MF + his MF. If you make the kill it's just your MF that counts.

Most of the time (certainly to begin with) you'll find it more beneficial to have a utility merc (doing whatever kind of damage you don't, or adding a useful aura) than one that adds MF, though.

It's the superior effectiveness of the Cloak of Shadow + Mindblast combination that most refer to.

The shadow/blast sequence that's prevented me from ever losing an assassin (hardcore exclusive):

    - run obnoxiously into area
    - start getting chased by mobs (panic)
    - cast 'Cloak of Shadows'
    - note that, while some are blinded, some mobs are still charging
    - spam 'Mind Blast' on chasing mobs (while trying to sprint away)
    - breathe
