How to make a Martyr viable in Hell

I have been intrigued by the ridiculously obscene damage potential of a Martyr Paladin build, but have been wondering how to make them so that they do not kill themselves.

Sacrifice deals 8% damage back. Using PDR would cut that down to 4%. Maybe a Prayer Merc would help a lot, as well as tons of life leech of course.

Has anyone else tried that build in 1.10? Would that setup be enough?

The next problem would be PIs. Of course, you could put points into Vengence or Holy Shock for them, but what about this possibility.

In 1.10, the Amp Damage curse can break a Physical Immunity. Would it be possible to carry a Amp Damage wand, or use a weapon with Amp Damage?

If anyone has any experience with this build, or knows any guides that discuss it, I would appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks,

I can think of one thing (OK, two, but you may not have runes for the second option) that you will NEED: Dracul's Grasp. The Life Tap would be essential to your survival. The second solution would be Exile in a shield, however, the runes are expensive and it's not that great compared to HoZ for stats (although the lvl 16 Defiance when equiped is very nice, I hear.) It also has Chance to Cast Life Tap.

I hadn't thought about Life Tap, but that would really help out a lot. I don't have Dracul's or the runes for Exile yet, but I should be able to get them eventually.

Thanks, for the suggestions.

Are you sure that PDR affects the damage caused by Sacrifice? I think you ought to check that out before you even think about this build, because there's a heck of difference between 4% damage and 8%!

I'm also not convinced about the "huge damage potential". Slvl 20 Sacrifice gives you 465% ED. A Zealot with maxed Sacrifice gets 336% ED and hits much faster, and Slvl 20 Charge gives you 575% ED even without any synergies, so has the potential to go MUCH higher than Sacrifice.

Sacrifice also recieves 15% per pt in redemption and 5% per pt in fanatism. So with maxed synergies, thats 865%ED! excluding the %ED from a maxed fanatism. Sounds like great damage to me.

You do have a problem with unleechable PIs though (eg. ghosts etc) If you use amp damage, you can't leech off them with life tap etc. Possibly an Azurewrath with zeal?

Its better to zeal in the beginning anyway to get life tap off than to start with sacrifice immediately.

True, but charge is more of a PvP oriented skill, and it is bugged to stop you in place, not to mention what do you do against a boss that can't be knocked back or when you hit an imovable object?

and 465% ED is HUGE, and with synergies that will be pumped to even higher levels.

Also, in the Zeal v. Sacrifice argument, maybe the poster want to build a martyr and shy away from "traditional builds," i.e. WW barb, Hammerdin, Fanat Zealot, LF Zon, etc...

As for the martyr itself, with 50% PDR, the damage will be reduced to 4% of your total life. Since hell reduces your leech to 1/4, you need 16% LL just to break even against monsters where leech is 100% effective. Drac's grasps gives you 10% (+lifetap) and it is quite easy to get 6% on a magic ring (clvl req'd 35).

I say run with it and try and get as much LL as possible. Hell, maybe I'll even try out this build.

Best of Luck!

EDIT: On switch, throw a Bstar and use zeal. With 5 hits, that is 5-1k damage of each element!

Cathan's Seal gives you 6% and is equippable at a very low level indeed. (See--I can be helpful too :)).
