Hey Zoskiller, people usually pair Frozen Orn with another skill, either a fire or lightning skill. You can max Chain lightning or Fireball and Meteor to make a Meteorb. Check this link for a treaure trove of builds

If you want FULL Frozen orb then you will have some points left over since they only have 1 synergy skill and a mastery that is optimised at lvl 17. Mana won't be a problem so going full 20 into warmth would be a waste (imo, warmth should stay at lvl 1).

If you're going just for max Frozen Orb, you will have lots of spare points, as has already been said. I'd recommend an Energy Shield/Frozen Orb Sorceress - a very good character to run Hell Mephisto for example, and one that can do so without fear of dying (i have an ES sorc and i can take at least 3 Ice Balls or whatever they're called, from Mephisto on Hell ). Of course, a Blizzard sorceress would be better (faster), but a lot more fragile (tho mana burn uniques will be really anonying to an ES sorc), whereas for an ES sorc, you don't have to invest in resistances at all, so you can concentrate on having as much MF as possible (but you will need lots of +skills for prebuffing). Just my 2 cents.

Why in earth do people tihnk cold mastery is optimized at level 17? For gods sake, that's only the cap for enemies with 0% resistance. There are lots of enemies who have more resistance than that. I would aim for -200% after facets. The other way to spend the points aren't nearly as good as givig your orb raw damage. The orb is the main part of your build anyway. Even though it's not so useful, will points in fire mastery be more useful? Your main attack is orb, and therefore you should make it as good as possible.
I would focus all my gear on the orb. Even if you're a firewall hybrid. Unless you don't want to perfect your orb of course, but I personally like perfecting my main attack. That is what your build is focused around anyway

Poor gear follows:
Helm: Peasant Crown until Shako
Armor: Stealth RuneWord until Vipermagi (or Tals Armor, if going 4 partial set)
Belt: options here. Aim 4 Light and Fire resist rares until Tals or Arach
Gloves: Trangs, Magefist or Frostburn
Boots: Rare with FRW, Fire and Light Resists, WaterWalk
Weapon: Rare Sorc orb or stone, +2 sorc skills (or cold), FCR, mana or life. Get Occulus after and Death's Fathom last.
Rings: FCR with resists, life and mana until Soj and Raven.
Ammy: +3 cold skills with life or mana or +2 sorc skill with resists until mara's or tals.
farm for some resist charms, prior fire and light resists...
I think thats it... 4 now. Remember anni, torch and cold skillers. I'd go torch first.

Another good cheap weapon is the Spirit runeword, put it in a 4 socket broad or crystal sword (until you get an occy). For a shield look to get a lidless wall then later on a spirit monarch shield.
Stats (for no block sorc):
Str: 156 for monarch
Dex: none
Vita: The rest goes here
Energy: none (put an insight polearm on your merc for mana regeneration)
This assumes you are playing on bnet ladder, if not then that would change the gear goals.

If you're running bosses then it's easier to justify dumping more points into CM, but, for instance, meph has about 175%, so there's still no point in getting to 200%.
Because once you get into hell, many monsters are cold immune, while some other monsters are resistant. So really, you're only getting a benefit against a small group of monsters.

I wouldn't say firewall would help more against meph than cm does.
It probably is up to personal preference if you want to stop at 150, 175 or -200, but stopping at -100 is just... mentally limited imo
It doesn't take many points. There are many enemies with 50% cold res. A -150% setup will do 33,33% more damage against them than -100%. I understand maxing fire wall before more cm points but fm before cm..
