How much to tip at a buffet?

So me and my bro go to a buffet twice a week here in Nevada. My father apparently is an avid gambler and has saved muchos points on his casino card, and since he's out of town, we use the card points to get ourselves free food, and free movie tickets. Well not really free...but who cares it's just my dad's money ^_^
Anyway, I have no idea what to tip the waiters. Usually the buffet is at a fixed price i.e 5.99 for lunch. 6.99 for dinner. Should I tip 10-15%? Or should I just tip them like a dollar or two? No idea.

Id leave a buck at the VERY most. Im pretty sure buffet workers and table clearers arent paid the same way your normal waiters are. And if they are...why the hell work at a buffet?

True. And the place is pretty big and the waiters circulate a lot so they must make a bunch of money off the tips in any case.

I've worked in food service, so I always overtip.

I usually tip $3 on a $15 buffet bill, as long as they keep my iced tea refilled.

I usually just double the tax when tipping someone. Here in Texas the tax is 8.25%, so doubling that is enough. If I get excellent service Ill give a few dollars more.

I tip for service. Since buffets are self serve, I leave no tip. The preparers do no more for me than they would at a fast food joint. In fact, they don't even do that much. At least at Burger King, for instance, I get my food handed to me at the counter on a tray whereas at a buffet I must get my own tray, plate, silverware and food. Why should I tip them any more than the guys who stock the shelves at my grocery store? Same principle.

it's a buffet, all they get you are drinks, and unless you're a heavy drinker and drinks constitute the majority of your bill or they do something to distinguish themselves in their drink deployment, I say no tip

And there we go. That's why some people have a low opinion of the serving industry. Because jerks like you think you're somehow entitled to a tip no matter what. GPBH is right. I tip for the service I receive. If it's a buffet, then there is no waiter. Therefore I dont tip.

Well when the service is really nice, i.e my server constantly refills, comes around and asks what I need, I usually leave a 2-3 dollar tip. But thats rarely. I've met some surly waiters at the buffet as well.

And does that mean I should tip the same percentage as I do when someone brings the food out, takes orders, and so on and so forth? I don't think so.

And for the record, I've not yet been to a buffet where someone brings me a drink. I don't drink alcoholic beverages, and everything else is self-served, essentially.

Just so you know, I worked as a restaurant manager for five years, and I am fully qualified to assess tipping etiquette. Buffets DONT provide service. All they do is wipe your table after you leave and take your dishes away. Do they not do that at fast food places as well? Do you tip at Mickey D's?

If you have buffets where they fill your drinks, then it still does not deserve a tip like you'd expect at a full SERVICE restaurant. Filling my drink once does not equate into a several dollar tip. Taking my order, serving me food, and tending to my needs DOES deserve such a tip. But what buffet provides that? How about NONE. Buffets are self serve by definition, so technically any tip would be for myself.

Oh, since you did ask, here is my picture. Now that you know who I am, before you go sabotaging my food, you might want to make sure I'm not the pilot on your next flight someplace, because I shall expect a tip. If I am going to tip buffet people, you can tip pilots. We provide a service too, don't we? Or is that different?

If there's someone that gets your drinks and brings silverware, etc then I think a small tip is warranted. If not, then no tip is necessary.

The only buffets I go to are Chinese ones. I always leave a tip there. Samara makes a giant mess and even though I try to pick up her dropped food off the floor, they usually have to bring on the hand vac.
