How Much Armor Will A Rune Word Item Have?

I may want to make a chest armor Rune Word, but the Rune Word descriptions do not mention how much armor they will have.

Is there a way of finding out before going through with it? I do not want to make mistakes or an inferior one through ignorance.

I'm not sure I understand your question.

The runeword lists specify the enhanced defense % that each rw affords, and the result is also determined by the base item you choose to make the runeword in. For example, I made this armor some time ago :whistling:

    Smoke
    Wyrmhide
    NefLum
    Defense: 822
    Durability: 24 of 24
    Required Level: 50
    Required Strength: 84
    Fingerprint: 0x6702bbd1
    Item Level: 80
    Version: Expansion 1.10+
    +20% Faster Hit Recovery
    +75% Enhanced Defense
    +280 Defense vs. Missile
    +10 to Energy
    All Resistances +50
    -1 to Light Radius
    Level 6 Weaken (18/18 Charges) 2 Sockets (2 used)
    Socketed: Nef Rune
    Socketed: Lum Rune

I don't remember what the base defense was, but it must have been between 364 and 470, since that is what wyrmhides get. When I made the runeword, the defense was increased by 75%. So, if we assume it had 470 defense (perfect), then it went up by 75% to 470+0.75*470=822.5-->822, which is what it has now.

Some rw armors do not modify the base armor by a percentage, but simply add a certain amount, enigma for example. Other rw armors do not change the defense.

I hope that answers your question.

    iirc its this or similar
    final def = added def + int(base def*(ed+100)/100)

    int(#) always rounds down ex.
    int(1.990) = 1

    added def, example

if an armor spawns with ed (superior), its base def is max +1
    lists here http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/weaponsandarmor.shtml

Re: How Much Armor Will A Rune Word Item Have?

One more thing: if you make a runeword with +ed% in a superior (with ed%) armor, it's a bit more complicated. :)

Suppose I decide to make Smoke in this:

    Superior Wyrmhide*
    Defense: 541
    Durability: 19 of 24
    Required Level: 50
    Required Strength: 84
    Fingerprint: 0xaa1bdd9d
    Item Level: 83
    Version: Expansion 1.10+
    +15% Enhanced Defense

Then, the defense is not floor(541+0.75*541), but rather floor(471+0.15*471+0.75*471) since the ed% from the rw stacks with the ed% from being superior, not on top of it.

Btw, I use floor() instead of int(), but it means the same thing.

Also keep in mind that repair costs are outrageous for a rw in an item with increased durability (as in around 500k per durability point repaired).

    * Yeah, yeah, I know it doesn't have 2 sockets.

Absolutely, but you need to roll the 1/3 chance of being socketed at the same time as you roll the 5% chance of being ethereal, so you don´t see them often. However, there are the two ways of adding sockets yourself...

Hmmmm....I'm pretty sure that there is only one, Prudence. I have one, but I've never used it. :p Not that there's anything wrong with it, I just haven't made a character that focuses on defense, and I have better armors for other characters.

A few weapon rws have the indestructible mod, Oath for example.

you can also cube and larz socket 0os eth items
cube will cause the e-bug, (2x the eth bonus, 2x 50% ed)

best for merc gear or runewords with zod or indestructable mod

    so basically its impossible

Re: How Much Armor Will A Rune Word Item Have?

The bug only works only for armor, and the two bonuses combined turn out to be 125%.

No. That's for socketing a rare item, and it's an h-cube recipe that most likely no one uses, well except for dupers who are just oozing SoJs.

Use the socket recipes for normal armor and weapons. Ex:

1 Tal Rune + 1 Thul Rune + 1 Perfect Topaz + Normal Body Armor = Socketed Body Armor of same type
