How fast will people level?

How fast will people level?

Hey all,

I was just day dreaming at work today and popping in D3 for the first time, having a blast and I was wondering, how quickly do you think people will level? I am skewed by D2 ladder resets and feel like after 2 days we will see people in the high 70's if not sooner than that. So questions to ponder.

What will the learning curve be like in D2?

How quickly will people figure out the game?

Will there be people who wont be ooohing and aahing, but will be powering to level asap?

Do you expect the experience farm to be planted within the first week? (I.E. if D2 debuted 10 years ago with patch 1.12 how long would it take people to be doing non-stop baal runs).

I hope it takes awhile for people to to accomplish high lvls. I know it doesnt really matter because I am not an uber ladder challenger, but I feel like im being left behind when I log on 12 hours into a ladder period and see lvl 85's.

I want your time machine, and I want it now.

What will the learning curve be like in D2?
"Easy to learn, difficult to master".

How quickly will people figure out the game?
Hardcore: Very

Casual-core (me): Quickly

Casual: At their own pace.

Every one will be going at their own pace, but given the "casual" bracket is going to be the median, then the above makes sense.

Will there be people who wont be ooohing and aahing, but will be powering to level asap?
100% sure.

Given D3 follows the D2 structure more closely than D2 followed D1's... probably not very long. Give it a month or two, and that kind of stuff is going to be figured out until something better comes along.

I hope it takes awhile for people to to accomplish high lvls. I know it doesnt really matter because I am not an uber ladder challenger, but I feel like im being left behind when I log on 12 hours into a ladder period and see lvl 85's.
Every one will catch up to these guys eventually. High level won't be a cakewalk to achieve, but you can't expect to get there in no time if you only play less than 10 hours a week.

well there is a big difference between 1-2 months vs. 1-2 weeks. power leveling in 1-2 months isnt really power leveling. I think your responses are great, but the time period is a little fluctuated.

main point of the thread: After 3 days of playing the highest level char on the ladder will be: X?

my guess is 86

It seems to me that super fast leveling in Diablo II is enabled by everyone already knowing the best places to level (and to some extent high levels that already exist to rush etc.). It seems the Dev team's goals this time around was to make it more even/linear and not "level here until this level, then move to this, then move to this". How well they managed that, and how long it takes us to figure out the best places to "run" for EXP if they didn't manage it very well, will all have a bearing on how quickly people level. I admit I usually don't pay much attention to the ladder race, so I'm not sure if lvl 86 in 3 days is slow or fast on a fresh ladder (with no high lvls to rush/lead runs), but I imagine leveling in Diablo III will be slower than a fresh ladder on Diablo II just because of the aforementioned knowing exactly where to run for exp depending on your current level range that we have all figured out in Diablo II. I am sure those willing to commit tons of time (the hardcore gamers) will fly through the quests/zones and level up the natural way fairly quickly though.

I really hope the leveling is slow, relatively of course, in comparison to D2. After years and years of playing it's nice to bust a new character into the 60's within a day, if not a few hours. The downside is it takes away any sense of accomplishment.

Obviously the majority will take it slow at the beginning so we can see what the new story is. That will add a decent amount of time for the first couple plays through, but after a while everyone will start skipping dialogue and cutscenes once we know the missions by heart.

I'd like to see a leveling system that takes upwards of a month to get to the end game. Not the 1-85 in a couple days and 85-99 over a month or more, but something more balanced. The idea is good. You don't want to be stuck for a long time with the basic skills, but you want to be excited and feel accomplished when you level up. Ideally I'd like to see 1-30 (or whatever the highest skill cap is) go fairly quickly. Maybe a week or two worth of playtime, depending on the time devoted. After 30 there should be a more averaged leveling system. 30-40 about a week. 40-50 about 2. 50-60 a few weeks to a month, 60-70 a month or over, 70-80 a couple months, etc. Just ball park figures, but at least a rough estimate. If they make leveing fun like it was early on, not just endless chaos runs/ bloody foothill runs / baal runs / whathaveyou, it would make leveling up a lot more fun and worthwhile. Another problem is that by level 80/85 most of the additions skill points / skills you get are a novelty. Yes they'll increase your kill speed a little, and give you a little more health, but for the most part there's little difference between an 85 and 99. Especially when you factor in items.

tl:dr, I hope they make levels 80-100 both attainable and useful for characters.

after 3 days of playing i have no idea... but in diablo 2 when i first played it i was like 10 years old so it took a while for me to understand :p and it is a big difference between playing single and multiplayer.. after 3 days of single player i am around 30 in d3 id guess... what a stupid question.. ill leave it to that:grrr:

after three days of playing? well i,d guess maybe 79? Also it's going to depend on how many/how long the acts are.

They've said they want to remove rushes and force you to play the game properly... I'm going to go with the highest character after three days being about 50/60 because it sounds like they want to slow levelling down... I know there will be people that don't sleep for days for a fact.

defintely and the people who dont sleep to keep playing will be in the minority, but I think this is fun speculation.

I agree with what you guys have said, I really hope the game is a lot more drawn out and that they make plenty of changes between normal and nm and nm to hell and what not to make it more difficult. I dont want to play normal once or twice in D3 and then have an ultimate sense of how to speed through the game.

Re: How fast will people level?

a potential problem with a linear leveling route, as everyone wants, as oppesed to the baalrun situation is that it may be very tricky to find others at your level to play with. thus making you stop at a point because it gets boring by yourself, there needs to be a huge player base which i doubt diablo 3 will sustain, even if it does start off ok.

so baalrun's work because everyone can do them and know there gonna get good xp.

though with that in mind they're boring and i would like a run through of theWHOLE act to be only marginally less eficient if even less efficient atall.

Re: How fast will people level?

Maybe the problem will be solved not by how fast will people level, but as how important it will be. Maybe it'll be more important your strategy or having a wide variety of items (which you'll get from various quests -and not by crafting-, and so, you'll have to spend more time to get them), making shorter the differences between, for example, level 60 and 90

Hard, as I remember seeing a screenshot of items that give bonus exp.

I cannot speak for a game under development. But this is how I suppose it will be or how I will be playing it.

What will the learning curve be like in D2?
Flat :)

How quickly will people figure out the game?
You mean knowing it's nuts and bolts?
Pretty long, I believe. One or two years maybe?

Will there be people who wont be ooohing and aahing, but will be powering to level asap?
I like to ooh and aah a lot. I don't play games that don't make me ooh and aah.
Ooh and Aah is the reason I play games.

Do you expect the experience farm to be planted within the first week? (I.E. if D2 debuted 10 years ago with patch 1.12 how long would it take people to be doing non-stop baal runs).
I have no idea. If it happens, the game failed at least in its attempt to provide a more varied gameplay.

I like to ooh and aah also haha and search every nook and cranny for whatever I can.

In terms of how long it will take people to find the "baal run" of the game, it isnt really a fail if there are exp farms, just as long as they are tasetful, engaging, and numerous. It'll be interesting to see how they handle it and could be blizz's biggest challenge

Diablo III will be a great game with players always 3 times above your level which will have absolutely no life.

You will haha ohh ahh and have a great experience about the game no matter how sick hardcore players can be .

Re: How fast will people level?

Easy in the beginning, fairly challenging in the middle, hard as %$#@ towards the ending.

Using D2 as an example, instead of the 90s whereby the EXP barely moves although hordes of monsters in Hell are vanquished, it should start in the 70s, or when the advance tiers can be used.

As long as there are no quest exploits and level leeching, the game will not be easy, because people are too accustomized to D2, which is " Baal glitch-> rush to Hell -> leech at Chaos". TP ,teleport abuse/enigma, "omightyhammerdins" and "justfindthenextlevel" dungeons just made things alot easier.

Be prepared to NOT see all these in D3. And walk, for god's sake.
