How fast can weapon speed get?

Suppose you have a weapon that is already rated as very fast attack speed. Further suppose that it is socketed, let's just say it has 6 open sockets and we stick 6 shaels in it just for the hell of it.

Exactly how fast can a weapon get?

To be honest, that depends on the base weapon, the character that wields it and the skill that is being used.

For example, one of the fastest attacks is an Amazon using a Cho-Ko-Nu crossbow and the skill Strafe. She only needs 10 IAS to get the maximum speed possible and hit an enemy 8.3 times per second.

Use this website for more information on all weapons, classes, skills and IAS.

Normal attacks and skills with no speed aspect to them can get to an 8 frame attack.

Strafe can get to 2 frames.
Zeal can get to 4.
Fire claws can get to 4 as a bear.
Whirlwind I think is 4 or 6 frames max.

The IAS for these depends on class, and what weapon is being used.

I think the answer you're looking for is : it will never show anything 'faster' than very fast. However, with all the numbers that go into it... well, you're better off asking about a specific weapon, for a specific character.

Words like "very fast attack speed" mean essentially nothing as two weapons can have such a description and swing/shoot/stab/whatever at very different speeds.

The best way to look at it is FPA, or frames per attack. Supposedly werebear assassins with the right shaeled magic claws can get as fast as 2 FPA with a normal attack (the limit on Zeal is 4 FPA), but that's got to get buggy and the weapon itself wouldn't be very powerful.

The actual hitting rate depends on many factors:
1) Weapon type (1h slashing, 1thrusting, 2h swords, bows, crossbows, etc);
2) Character class;
3) Weapon internal speed bonus - Weapon Speed Modifier. Because of WSM weapons of the same class (1H swords, for instance) vary from slow to very fast;
4) Type of attack. Some attacks are faster, some are slower.
5) Increased attack speed (IAS). Wirlwind counts only WSM and IAS on a weapon, no iAS on other items is counted. Other attacks count any IAS on equipment the same way;
6) Speed-increasing skills. Fanatisism, Frenzy, Boost of speed - when active, they all increase speed of any attacks.
7) Condition of being chilled and/or slowed.
To find out how often does your char hit it's easier to use the speed calculator Dawnmaster has given.
