Update: Horadric Cache legendary item drop rates greatly buffed in a hotfix after Patch 2.1 in Sept 2014. Going forward, a cache-only legendary item should drop from 1/2 of caches on T2, scaling up to 100% drop rate from caches earned on T6.

Recently I partook in some split bounty farming. Ordinarily I hate that approach, each person completing an act's Bounties and everyone in game getting a cache even though they didn't even set foot in the act. Cheeky Merlot with your cheese madam? But this was for research purposes.

So last week I set about collecting 100 Horadric Caches with fellow IncGamers' clan mates, in particular fellow Demon Hunter AnthonyH, I ended up getting 102 because, well, counting is difficult. It was tough resisting opening them, especially as I was desperate for legendary mats and was convinced the caches would contain salvageable legendary items. Resist I did and then I set about opening them all and I videoed as I indulged in the cache-opening frenzy.

I list everything I got and display any of the good stuff.

The ironic thing with all the caches we got is that AnthonyH, who I had farmed with, had been farming for the last ring I got, I wasn't even much bothered about it. He never did get it. I felt bad for at least 3 seconds until I slipped that bad boy on my finger.

I had heard you can expect around 10% Legendary rate from caches, that's anecdotal though, but it's pretty much the experience I had here with 11 legendaries in 102 Caches.

Here’s the final tally from my 102 bags:

    • Marquise Gems: 255 (2.5 per bag)
    • Reusable Parts: 347 (3.47 per bag)
    • Arcane Dust: 255 (2.55 per bag)
    • Veiled Crystal: 30 (.3 per bag)
    • Rift Key Fragments: 202 (2 per bag)
    • Health Potions: 154 (1.54 per bag)
    • Blood Shards: 25 (1 per 4 bags).
    • Rare Items: 127 (1.27 per bag)
    • Legendary Items: 11 (1 every 9 bags)
    • Crafting Plans: 0 (Very rare drop, and the odds depend on how many plans your Smith doesn’t already know.)

What has been your experience? Better or worse than mine?

    Thanks.

To put it this way, I have been after the gloves of worship, pride\'s fall, mad monarch\'s scepter and the ring of royal grandeur from day 1 of Reaper.

Around 1880 bounties later, and the only one I have found is the scepter, and even that happened only this week, after having found endless amounts of purple cloaks, leoric\'s shoulders and helltrappers.

Funny thing is that while it\'s frustrating as hell and kinda tedious, it\'s also one of the closest thing we have in game to running meph and pindle back in the day, so I will keep doing them, both alone and with others, as the ring of royal grandeur is pretty much a mandatory endgame item :)

Not bad luck there, Elly! =)

Yeah, 10% seems spot on. I haven\'t kept track of how many caches I\'ve opened (would\'ve been nice if they counted towards some achievement) but 10% was my guesstimate before reading this article.

I could be mistaken/unlucky but I think I\'ve only gotten bounty-specific legendaries from caches, so I\'m beginning to the suspect that caches either cannot drop regular legendaries or do so at a much lower chance.

What I would like to know if it does matter if you open 10c0 aches at once or one by one each time you get one bounty cache. Has anyone tested this? The rates should be simmiliar though, but you never know how exactly their loot distribution works.

    It does not matter, really.

It looks like they\'ve made it now so you can zoom further out than before. Is that right?

Does anyone have similar statistics on gambling? After spending a few thousand Blood Shards it seems to me the chance to get a Legendary is about 1%, but I\'d like to see more data.

And here we see a Demon Hunter in its natural habitat. Sifting through loot, caressing her shinies. In war torn Westmarch upgrades are few and far between, but players always find a way...

Same as me and yet to get a shiny. I\'m still determined to get a L70 Kridershot for my DH but alas - not to be yet :)

Pure guess here but I would say it\'s about 5% for gambling right now. Generally if I gamble a full inventory worth of items I get a single legendary item each time. That said, it could certainly be less than 5%, the times when I get zero legendary items happens far more often than getting two at once.

Last night I spent about 380 shards (forgot the exact figure) on the cheapest items (5 shards) and got 3 legendaries. So about 1 legendary every 25 items.

I might\'ve been lucky, but either way it\'s higher than the 0 legendaries per 1000ish shards I\'d gotten pre-patch, so I\'m not complaining.

Elly must have nerves of steel to be able to open that many caches and avoid the twitch to run and collect all the legendaries and boodshards as soon as they appear. I\'d be too nervous of a disconnect!

I played 3 rifts last night and all I got from them were 4-5 gem recipes. -Which is fine, by the way, but I thought it was funny to get only gem recipes one after another like this.
Then I ran the bounties for Act 2 and got a legendary recipe (crossbow, can\'t remember which one), legendary cloak (can\'t remember which one) and the set recipe for Guardian\'s Contingency. I was playing as crusader, so I didn\'t pay that much attention to the legendaries. The set was cool to find, but my gear was already pretty equal to it\'s stats.

I\'ll have to do some more \'testing\' tonight. ;)

Over 2000 shards and I have gotten 1 legendary. Not sure how many caches but I have gotten 1 from all of those also. And to your original point, just personally I don\'t know how blizzard allows split farming! It seems to go against the principal of \"if you are not there you don\'t get it\" . It is someone else playing and you get the loot, kinda like a bot.

They allow it because it allows for freedom play style. Its not like a bot and whether you want to play as a group or alone is up to you. Dont like it? Get clan mates together or put it in private and find a group that wants the same .
