    Honking

In Asia, especially in Philippine and China everyone honks just to get people out of the way. Japan it's pretty quite. Everyone seems courteous.

Europe is spotty. Greece honks like mad. Italy is moderate. In Spain people are courteous.

In US it's very rare. Is it a cultural thing?

    Re: Honking

I hear a honk about every other month or so.

The problem with honking is that it only says one thing "Get the hell out of my way you son of a ****" Then you can flash your headlights which means a polite "hey" but cars need to be facing you in order to see that.

We need an audio signal for cars that is polite.

or a verbal MSN for cars.

I think the only time I've honked my horn was back when I first took my driving test. The only point in using it is if somebody doesn't notice you coming.

Israel is pretty bad for honking. I'll tap the horn occasionally for people who are sitting at a green light and not looking.

I can imagine. Honk at the wrong car and the driver might be startled and push the detonator by accident.

    Re: Honking

The problem with honking in the US is you have to be careful who you honk at. Chances are, if you honk at a male in the US, ages 18-25, then he will become road enraged, and attempt to cause problems for you and act all tough.

I still honk though, if it's obvious someone isn't paying attention at a light, or I need to warn someone coming over into my lane that doesn't see me.

Those culturally insensitive pricks, the city is called Mumbai, not Bombay!

Yeah, my wife was there. She could tell they're fighting windmills here.

Are you serious? It's a while since I've been in Rome, but the noise... and the stunts some drivers pulled? Breathtaking.

I've not been that recently either, but I recall every second car with its front end done in, pretty risky just crossing the road as well.

    Re: Honking

I honk at people who do dangerous things around me like try to merge into me (18 wheelers like to do it for some reason) or who cut me off. Other than that only to get people's attention like when they're sitting at a green light for an extended time. I did honk a while ago at a bunch of punk teenagers who were strolling slowly down a narrow road not paying attention to the car slowly following them for 50 meters. I got a dirty look from one of them who looked like he'd like to say something but I guess he thought better of it.

    Re: Honking

I'm so used to not doing it, and the relevant time window is so short, I have never honked at anyone.

    Re: Honking

When I should honk I'm usualy too shocked from almost running over someone on a bike or another car almost pushing me off the road that I forget to honk.

    Re: Honking

In the U.S. it's rare?? I guess it depends on where you are. In my hometown of about 40,000, it was rare, but here in Milwaukee, everyone honks like mad. And in Chicago it's even worse.

Personally, I'm like Johnny. I forget, and I don't think of using the horn unless it's to alert someone of danger, not "Hey, you didn't move within 0.1 seconds of the light being green!"

    Re: Honking

I never understand the people who are too afraid to honk. Honking at someone isn't automatically bad. It can be a simple reminder to someone at a green light that they should actually move forward or it could be a warning to someone who looks like they're about to do something dangerous.

Of course, there's also honking at someone when they're being a complete moron. And I fully support that kind of honking. Sure, they may get pissed off at you. But they deserve it and hopefully they'll eventually figure out why you were doing it in the first place.

Honking with a purpose = good

    Re: Honking

Typically in the U.S., as long as traffic is moving ok there's no honking. Get into a busy metropolis during traffic jams and you'll hear tons of it.

    Re: Honking

That's when I honk too. The only other time I've really done it was in the snow when my car started sliding instead of stopping. I knew I was going to go through the intersection, so I just leaned on the horn hoping people would hear me and get out of the way if they needed to. Fortunately no one was coming from the cross-street.

I thought it was because the car horns were more rhythmically gifted in certain cities.
