The melee characters tend to be very item-intensive near the latter end of the game, and thus most people start out with something like the Skellimancer or Meteorb sorc, which do not need that much good gear, and then use them to magic find for the other characters. But if your heart is set on a meleer, a frost zealot would be a good choice. All you need is crushing blow, a few pieces of plus skills equipment, and you're set. There is a guide in the paladin forum. Also, if you can build of a small store of perfect gems, you can buy the Immortal King Set, which apparently makes for a hell-viable whirlwind barbarian. I've never made one, but I have read that it works well. There are also melee assassin builds, just browse through the character forums and look at guides. Whatever you build, if it's a meleer you'll want maxed block with your shield, as close to maxed resists in hell as you can get, a whole lot of life, and some damage reduction if you can get it.

yea.

Warriors are too expensive

Try the cookie cutters first, i.e. windy druid, hammerdins, skellymancers, and meteorb sorcs.

These are LESS item dependant, and can mf pretty well.

Btw, what realm/core/type do u play? I may be able to help

go for meteorb, and get items first, when you become pretty well off, then you can build whatever you want

I agree with the cookie cutter suggestion. I'm also curious what realm you're going to play on as I could hook you up with some nice starter gear too (depending on the build).

The Wind Druid suggestion is a good one - they don't need a lot of items, are quite powerful into Hell, and are easy to build. Also, for the first 30-something levels, the Wind spells don't do much, so you will be fighting warrior-style. Your melee attacks are significant through Nightmare, but won't really accomplish much in Hell - but by then you'll have 75 or so levels behind you, so you will have had lots of melee fights.

I'll second the previous advice. Melee builds can be a lot of fun, but they require some pretty good gear to get further in the game. If you build a skellimancer or meteorb, you can use them to build up some good mules, and then take your melee character further with the stuff they found.

BTW, welcome to your new addiction :xsmile4:

Play whatever you want. Id also recommend playing SP (on your computer not the realms) until you beat Normal difficulty before coming to the realms. Melee characters require high level items late in the game (late Nightmare on), but ive built one thats doing well (with equipment help from Nolo :)) experiment with different chars/builds to find which ones you like.

The 2 classes that are most like the warrior from D1 are the paladin and the barbarian (the class from the demo). The druid also can be melee from the start.

A Zealot is my recommendation for a first melee build. There are also various legit zealot builds so you can customize it a little to your playstyle.

The easiest character to start from nothing is the skellimancer, with honorable mentions to the meteorb sorc, hammerdin, windy druid.

As mentioned before, Meteorb or Skelemancer are very potent characters that require little high end gear.

Personally, I started season 1 with a Concentrate Barbarian, which did a very adequate job as a way to gain items. And you get to play plenty of melee this way.
You won’t be a very successful killer in 8 player Baalruns, but the build allows you to survive Nightmare and most parts of Hell, even with mediocre gear.
Most of it comes down to your weapon. When you get yourself a decent damage weapon and average resist, you can tank quite well. Back then I got a Butcher’s Pupil relatively fast, and after finding a Runemaster (which you can get for a few perfect gems anyway I believe), I was set.
Putting a point into Find Item and doing Nightmare council, and later Hell council runs (found in act 3 Travincial, at the stairs to Durance 1) was my way of mfing then. It’s not as fast as a sorc doing Mephruns, but council often dropped nice things.

I suggest you read Halciet’s Concentrate Barb guide, as well as a Meteorb and Skelemancer guide at their respective forums, and then decide which build seems most appealing.

Have fun! (Ah, to be new to this game again, *nostalgic sigh*)

Hey, So...you are from Austrailia. If you have computer speed problems you might not want the Skeleton Necro char as it can cause lag when you get a lot of skellies.

If I were starting fresh right now I would read the Character Guides and pick my favorite. Look carefully at gear as most of the Guides are based on Gear I have never gotten, even after six months of playing this game.

Save flawless gems...cube to perfect gems and trade for the gear you need.

Make a Magicfind sorc soon (can be done with perfect gem traded gear) and do Nightmare Anderial and NM Mephisto runs. By the time you are level 75 or so you should be able to do Hell Mephisto runs and there you can get lots of great stuff.

Good hunting!
