    Hippies

OK, we need to define who in here is and is not a hippie so make your nominations and give the reason why.

I nominate HH cause he has hippie in his name

I nominate dantose because he's just a regular guy and hippies just want everyone to be on an equal level.

I nominate Durf. That whole era was his fault, the proof is undeniable.

Edit: I also nominate freet, but to a lesser extent, seeing as how it's Durf's fault Freet's a hippy.

*gets confused by his own logic* :cheesy:

    Define "hippie".

    That is, if you can.

    Ummm PLF?

The thing Ive learned about hippies, there are hippies who you would only know by a lengthy discussion with them. Then theres the "poser" hippies who just dress all stupid and say things like peace and love all the time.

So theres the spiritual hippie and the clothing hippie. I would punch all the clothing ones in the face at the same time I just need wider knuckles.

That is a poor definition. Fact is, few here actually know what a hippie is and to start labeling people without this knowlege is not a wise thing to do.

Hey, I don't pretend to know exactly what a hippie is. I'm just throwing out options. Blame dictionary.com, not me. :)

And we label people all the time. We have to. It's part of how the human psyche organizes its thoughts and determines its interactions with others.

Some key points in hippie ideology are:

A rejection of capitalism as a way to organise our conduct. To a varying degree also a rejection of materialism as a whole.

A wish to create a society based on immediate affectionate relationship between humans than laws and large distant political constructs. Actually hippies were dead serious when they gave you that "we are one big family" speech. It was not an allegory. They really wanted all of mankind to treat eachother as near family.

A wish to break free from our dependence on technology and industrial production. This is often coupled with a wish to be less destructive towards the biosphere as a whole.

Wouldn't a hippy be someone who opposed the direction society was taking in the 60's? Someone part of the cultural revolution?

or someone who just loves sex drugs and rock n' roll :)

I have no idea what a hippy is anymore, even though I guess I used to be one. It's a pretty general theme, really.
Back in the old days, if you liked rock music, had long hair, did drugs, scrawled peace signs on everything and believed The Man was out to get you, hated police and called them Pigs, etc. etc., you were a hippy.
I'm sure it's all different now, and I no longer care.

We don't really have any hippies in Ohio. The closest we have is potheads who think capitalism is a tool of evil oppressive corporate America to enslave us for life. But I don't think that's really that hippie-ish.

My cousin who lived in San Francisco, now living in Oregon is a hippie. He smokes weed, does X, runs a tea bar, probably grows weed, goes to raves, spray paints anti-government crap all over buildings, gets arrested often, writes his own music, and some other hippie like stuff. That's how I picture hippies, anyway. And we don't have any like that in Ohio, I think you have to go out to Cali for that stuff.
