High Runes ???

Why are there (almost) no trades for "low" items?

A member of this forum -Ulrik- has written a very nice guide about rune finding and he added lot of mathematical data.
For example how much Countess runs you would need to cube up to a Zod.
His guide is somewhere, just do a search.

I was just looking for the perfect weapon to put breath of the dying in. I actually started a 1.07 character in hopes of racking the perfect one, perhaps a superior +10% enhanced damage ethereal beserker axe. Then I looked some more, and found out I could just craft a superior ethereal beserker axe, imbue, and socket.
10% ED superior ethereal Enhanced Maximum Damage 250% ED Cruel Thunder Maul of Eviscreation with 1410 max damage anyone? Screw breath of the dying, and high runes along with it. Man I like 1.07. Hook a man up.

Hm bah runes. Hate the little buggers
Though i wouldnt say my luck with them is all bad. It isnt all great either.
Last night NM forge dropped my tesladin an Um, moments ago the chest behind meph dropped me a pul, so im happy for now. But considering that i USUALY can't even find anything above AMN. Bah.

My best find in 1.10 would be an Ist, from hell forge. :jig:

Oh, and i refuse to upgrade unless i absolutely have to. (usualy 3 lum's for a KO)

Now this is stricly a theoretical matter for me now, but if I'd still be playing D2, I'd still be clearing lots and lots of alvl85 areas for items and occasionally finding a rune or dozen along the way. If I'd get enough runes to create an runeword item I'd like, I'd make it. If I'd have to cube some runes to do so, I'd cube them.

When I did my runs, I didn't bother with just one specific area, such as Pindle, I did alot larger scale running. Each game I started out by clearing everyone's favorite: The Pits. After that I tried my luck with the slot machine Countess, who never dropped a single good item/rune, think the best was some mid lvl rune such as Hel. After she croaked I continued to kill my favorite: Andariel. It's just amazing how much items you can get from her in a very small time. This is also a place where a random Zombie minion dropped me a Ber rune while I was doing my 1000 Andy run listings.

After that it's normally time for me to head into the 3rd act and kill Mephisto, who has never been too kind for me in drops. When that's done and over with, I continue to Shenk & Eldritch who both drop some relatively useful items occasionally, and are fast to kill aswell. After that it's Baal and it's minions.

Now comes the most important part of my runs, while it doesn't give out much items normally, it's the best for the runes...Act4 River of Flame & Chaos Sanctuary. As the Wraith class monsters have increased chance of runedrops and they're both alvl85 areas where you encounter them, it's just natural that those are the good places. And that's not all, there's Hephasto and the super uniques at the Seals along with Diablo himself. What more can you ask?

Still, the best rune I've found was the Zod from some minion of Baal, don't have any idea which one as I had killed them all before clearing...ah well, you know the story (I've posted it so many times already). As for my second Zod, it's cubed from a Cham and other high level runes I traded from a reliable source (My own brother), along with couple runes I had found myself of course.

Just keep playing and you'll get the runes, it might take years or then it might take couple of hours, it's all a matter of luck. Still, you don't need BotD for anything, nor do you need Enigma, or CoH. Infact, the game only becomes more boring since a huge portion of the challenge is gone after you get the best items (talking about game difficulty, and the challenge of getting your personal goals).

Well, if you look at the maths i think it takes like 6 years or something doing countess runs on hell to make a zod

but then again you never know when you'll come by a rune while baaling/ mfing or doing whatever. Like i found a LO rune :surprise: while hell baaling.

Another point to consider is if the rune's attribs have any use. For example, LO doesn't really seem to have any use to me so i'll save it for cubing. UM on the other hand, has rez so i'll put it in a helm or armor.

I think that its best to just play the game and not worry about runewords, they demand a LOT of time to find. Its not like your char will be owned by each monster you come by if you don't have botd. And who knows, maybe you'll find some good runes just playing normally

I would say that is the best way to get them. Just go and explore many different areas, kill lots of normal monsters and open chests, kick urns, barrels, baskets, not just run Pit/Pindle/Meph/Baal as many people seem to do (myself included). That isn't even near as repetitive and it will test your char, can you handle all areas alone?

For example I got my Ohm from random boss in hell Far Oasis, Mal from normal monster, some Pul/Um/Ko runes is quite surprising places. In 1.09 I even got Ist from normal monster and that was in nm Foothills!

I have considered a long play session, clearing all every single area on hell difficulty on p8 without exiting the game. That could be the way to get some yummy stones

The best I have found in 1.10 is a Gul rune from Hell Forge, but I have managed to cube myself an Mal rune so I am halfway of getting an Ist rune.
And I blame Durf for the rarity of runes

I'm with Rag on this one. Run Hellforge, and take your spoils. Hopefully the forge is kind to you.

Borlag probably hit it on nail though. A high kill count over a larg area. That is the only way to get high level runes with at least some consistency.

@Lpr: That would be amazing, running all of hell on /players8. The problem would be getting a charcater that could effectively kill everything in the game. Hammerdin anyone?

Hammerdin can do it yes, and so can a twinked to the bone zealot (my guy had that botd when questing...). Basically it's only a matter of how fast you want to do it and if you do it alone or with a friend. I'd suggest MP :)

Most I got was a mal and thats from the only 2 chars that's completed the Hellforge quest.

Otherwise, just keep cubing all the runes you can find. I do 3 countess runs a day and I've cubed up to Ko as well as picking up two ists, 2 lems etc.

Just keep those you think you need more (eg. Um, etc) and cube everything else!

I always upgrade unless it's a rune I need to keep for socketing or a runeword.

One strategy that might be worth trying is playing like a thief... I'll explain.

Teleport to a Sparkly Chest and pop it (at Players 8) without engaging any monsters. Hit the Alt key and quickly check what drops. If no good runes, teleport out and try another one or quit and repeat. You'll get about 18 or so runes per hour (factoring in town time for replenishing pots, keys, etc). If it's a Sparkly Chest located in Act 5 such as Bonesaw's, you have a chance for a Zod. In 5-6 hours, you'll have a 100 runes and a 16% chance that at least one will be Ist thru Zod.

There are some other things I'd like to comment on, but instead I recommend that you read my updated Rune Finder's Guide. I made a separate recent post with the links.

Today a NM Hellforge dropped me an Um. Now that I read from Rag that it is the best NM HF can drop, I feel quite lucky! But my best rune drop was a Mal, that eventually was upgraded to an ist, that was traded some time ago.

High kill count on Hell Borlag says.

That would translate to mowing down Hell cows with a Synenergized LF Zon, right? :D
